The structure groaned around them like a dying beast, wood protesting its impending collapse in long, low creaks that seemed to echo the very fear coursing through Merrin’s veins. The water had reached her waist now, each surge sending fresh waves of icy chill across her skin—a relentless caress that promised only death by freezing or drowning if they didn’t find higher ground soon. She could feel Varikka pressed against her back, the younger woman’s teeth chattering audibly as terror shook her frame.

Below them, the creature’s bioluminescent markings pulsed ominously through the murky depths—the thing still lingered, its hunger a palpable force radiating through the water column. “M-Merrin,” Varikka stammered, voice barely a whisper, “what do we—” Her words were cut off by a sudden, violent shudder that ran through the entire structure. Merrin felt the staircase shift beneath her feet, wood groaning like a living thing in its death throes. For one horrifying moment, she thought they’d both plummet into the waiting depths below.

“No,” she hissed through clenched jaw, fighting to maintain her grip on the railing as the water surged again, threatening to tear them off their precarious perch. The weight of the situation bore down on her—trapped between rising water, collapsing structure, and whatever horrors lurked beneath the surface. She knew they couldn’t stay here much longer; hypothermia would set in long before the water reached the ceiling if they didn’t find higher ground or a heat source.

And the shrieking from above meant multiple threats were active and aware of their presence. Structural collapse was imminent; the entire structure could come down at any moment. Merrin’s eyes locked onto the Guardian, her grip on her dagger tightening. The air was heavy with tension as the Guardian’s glowing eyes seemed to bore into her very soul.

“You may either turn back now and avoid the dangers that lie within this passage,” it said, its voice a low, ominous rumble, “or you may continue forward and face whatever horrors await you.” As the Guardian spoke, the ground beneath Merrin’s feet shifted again, a fresh groan of straining wood echoing through the chamber. She glanced at Varikka, still climbing above the unstable staircase over the rising underground lake; water was now waist-deep in the main chamber and pit trap.

Structural collapse was imminent; entire structure could come down at any moment -> Merrin must navigate treacherous ledge or be crushed by falling debris -> Water pressure and volume increasing exponentially -> Limited options for escape or defense. The creature you seek is not to be trifled with, the Guardian had warned. But what choice did they have? They couldn’t turn back now—not with Varikka’s life at stake.

Merrin’s mind raced, weighing their limited options against the rising water and the unknown horrors that lay ahead. She knew she had to make a decision quickly, but every path forward seemed fraught with danger. The cold water lapped insistently at her waist, a constant reminder of their precarious situation.
