Merrin's voice cut through the din of rushing water and groaning stone, pulling Varikka and Seraphine back from the water's edge. The creatures closed in, their bioluminescent markings pulsing brighter as they sensed their prey. With a burst of adrenaline, Varikka sprinted toward the opening in the wall, her torch held high. The water lapped at her heels as she dashed across the lake, her eyes fixed on the narrow escape route.
Seraphine stumbled behind, her trance-like state broken only by Merrin's firm grip on her arm. As they neared the opening, Varikka could see the water surging forward, threatening to sweep her off her feet. She reached out, grabbing the edge of the gap just as a wave crashed against her legs.
