Phase: escalating

Merrin's heart pounded in her chest as she squeezed through the narrow opening, the creatures' claws scraping against her back and their guttural growls echoing off the walls. She could feel the heat of their breath on her skin as she emerged into a larger chamber, the torch held high illuminating the space around them.
Fuck me sideways, Merrin thought as she took in the scene before her. The chamber was filled with rushing water, the sound of it flowing through hidden passages deafening. And floating in the center of the room was... something. Something massive and dark, its shape barely visible beneath the churning surface of the water.
Varikka! Merrin shouted, her voice barely audible over the roar of the water. Where are you?
There was no response. Only the sound of rushing water and the distant echo of something heavy being dragged across stone.
Shit. Merrin's mind raced as she tried to process what had just happened. Varikka had been pulled under by some kind of... creature? And now she was trapped in a room with God knows what lurking beneath the surface of the water.
She took a step back, her eyes scanning the chamber for any sign of an escape route. But there was nothing. Just walls slick with water and the ominous shape floating in the center of the room.
Think, Merrin, she told herself, her hands trembling as she clutched the torch tighter. You're a rogue. You've dealt with worse than this.
But had she? The adrenaline was already fading, replaced by a cold dread that settled in the pit of her stomach. She was exhausted, chilled to the bone, and armed with little more than a torch and a heavy iron bar.
Focus, she thought, forcing herself to take a deep breath. You need to find a way out of here. And you need to do it fast.
She took another step back, her eyes never leaving the shape in the water. It hadn't moved since she entered the chamber, but that didn't mean it was harmless. In fact, everything about this situation screamed danger.
Varikka, Merrin whispered, her voice barely audible over the roar of the water. Wherever you are, I'm coming to get you. Just... hold on.
And with that, she turned her attention back to the chamber, determined to find a way out - and hopefully, a way to save her friend.
