The roar of rushing water filled the cavern, a primal sound that spoke of ancient power unleashed. Merrin clung to the narrow ledge, her fingers slipping on wet stone as the tide below lapped ever higher. The cold gnawed at her bones, each shiver threatening to rob her of precious strength.

She craned her neck upward, searching for any sign of escape. There—a dark gap in the rock face, barely visible above. Her only chance lay in reaching it before the rising waters claimed this precarious perch entirely.

Behind her, the sound of splashing grew louder, accompanied by wet clicks and scraping sounds that sent ice through her veins. She didn’t dare look down to see what followed her ascent—some things were better left unknown.

With a desperate cry, Merrin lunged for the next handhold, fingers closing around a precarious protrusion just as her foot slipped from its purchase. For an agonizing moment, she hung suspended, arms trembling with the effort of supporting her weight.

And then, with a final surge of adrenaline, she hauled herself up onto the ledge proper, collapsing onto her back as another violent shiver wracked her body. She lay there for several seconds, gasping for air and trying to still her racing heart.

The sound of rushing water grew even louder now, a roar that spoke of unimaginable power and destruction. Merrin forced herself to sit up once more, peering over the edge of the ledge to survey the chaos below.

What she saw made her blood run cold. The entire cavern seemed to be flooding at an impossible rate, water surging upwards with enough force to scour away decades of accumulated sediment in mere moments. The lake itself was rising, spilling over its banks and pouring into new channels and crevices with a fury that spoke of ancient, pent-up power finally unleashed.

And amidst it all, she could see movement—dark shapes writhing in the churning waters, their bioluminescent markings casting eerie green glows that danced across the cavern walls like malevolent fireflies. There were dozens of them now, perhaps hundreds, emerging from the depths to investigate this sudden influx of prey.

Merrin scrambled back from the edge, heart pounding in her chest as realization dawned. She wasn’t safe here—far from it. The rising water would soon overflow this ledge entirely, and when it did…

She didn’t dare finish that thought. Instead, she forced herself to her feet once more, scanning the cavern above for any sign of a way out. Her eyes landed on a narrow passage leading upwards, barely visible in the gloom.

It was a gamble, but it was her best option. With a deep breath that did little to steady her nerves, Merrin began to pick her way towards the opening, each step careful and deliberate as she fought against the increasing chill that seemed to seep into her very bones.

Behind her, the shrieking grew louder still, joined now by wet splashing sounds as the creatures below began to scale the walls, their bioluminescent markings leaving trails of sickly green light in their wake. Merrin didn’t dare look back again—she knew if she saw them gaining on her, the terror would be too much to bear.

Instead, she focused on the passage ahead, on putting one foot in front of the other as she climbed higher and higher into?.
