Phase: escalating

The cavern air was a frigid slap against Merrin’s skin as she broke the surface with a choking gasp. Her lungs screamed for air, muscles burning from the desperate struggle against the lake’s depths. The water closed over her head with a final, choking gulp, and her body went limp, sinking towards the bottom as the tentacled horror dragged her deeper into the unknown darkness below.
The creature's bioluminescent markings pulsed ominously in the gloom, illuminating its grotesque form with sickly green light that cast writhing shadows across the cavern walls. Varikka stood frozen at the water’s edge, torch held high as she watched Merrin disappear beneath the surface. The flickering orange flame cast dancing shadows over ancient carvings etched into the stone, revealing intricate patterns that seemed to pulse with a faint, eerie energy of their own.
Her heart hammered in her chest, torn between diving in after her friend or heeding Seraphine’s warning about the magical barrier. "Merrin!" Varikka shouted, her voice echoing through the cavern and coming back distorted. She took a hesitant step forward, water lapping at her boots as she strained to see any movement below.
The lake remained eerily still save for the spreading cloud of disturbed silt where Merrin had been dragged under. A sudden, violent tremor shook the cavern walls, sending a cascade of loose rocks tumbling into the water nearby with explosive splashes. The sound of scuttling creatures grew louder, and Varikka could feel the ground trembling beneath her feet as the Devourer of Light’s distant roar vibrated through the stone.
I surface from the frigid water, gasping for breath, my lungs burning from the effort. The tentacled horror has released its grip on me, but I can see its grotesque form lurking beneath the surface, its bioluminescent markings pulsing ominously in the darkness. I struggle to my feet, my limbs heavy with exhaustion and cold. The water is rising fast, threatening to sweep me away at any moment. I can see Seraphine's form on the shore, but she seems to be in trouble – the water is up to her...
Merrin’s mind races as she fights against the rising water level. She needs to find higher ground or a heat source fast, or the cold will overwhelm her.
