Phase: escalating

The sound of the Devourer of Light grew louder, its presence radiating an otherworldly energy that made Merrin's skin crawl. Varikka's grip on her hand tightened, her knuckles white with fear as she clung to the ledge beside her. The water beneath them churned violently, a massive wave crashing against the stone platform and threatening to sweep them both away.
Merrin's eyes darted up to the crumbling walls above, the section that had given way revealing a dark opening in the stone. It was their only way out of this nightmare, but the thought of leaving Seraphine behind filled her with dread. The wizard had dived into the water to save Varikka, and now she was lost beneath the surface.
"We can't just leave Seraphine," Merrin said, her voice shaking slightly as she stared at the churning depths below. "She's still down there, fighting for her life."
Varikka shook her head frantically, her dark eyes wide with fear. "But what choice do we have? The water's rising, and those...things are coming. We need to get out of here!"
Merrin bit her lip, torn between her loyalty to Seraphine and the desperate need to survive. She knew they couldn't stay much longer, but the thought of abandoning their friend was unbearable. As she looked back at the water, searching for any sign of movement, a sudden splash caught her attention.
"There!" Merrin pointed, her heart leaping with hope as she saw a hand break the surface, struggling to keep afloat. "Seraphine! She's alive!"
The two women watched in horror as their friend fought against the rising water, her elegant robes billowing around her as she tried desperately to stay above the surface. The current was too strong, pulling her towards the center of the room where the massive tentacles thrashed and writhed.
"Merrin, we have to help her!" Varikka cried out, her voice filled with urgency.
But Merrin knew it was impossible. The water was already up to their waists, and the creatures below were growing more aggressive by the second. They needed to find higher ground, fast.
"We can't," Merrin said grimly, her heart heavy with guilt. "We'd just end up in the same situation. We have to find a way out of here first."
Varikka's face crumpled with despair as she watched their friend struggle against the current. "But we can't just leave her!"
Merrin grabbed Varikka's arm, pulling her attention away from the water. "We're not leaving her," she said firmly. "We'll find a way to help her once we're safe. Right now, we need to focus on surviving."
The sound of cracking stone filled the air as another section of the ceiling gave way, sending a shower of rocks into the water below. The two women ducked instinctively, then looked up at each other with renewed determination.
"Come on," Merrin said, grabbing Varikka's hand and pulling her towards the opening in the wall. "Let's find somewhere safe before this whole place comes down around us."
As they climbed through the narrow passage, Merrin couldn't shake the feeling that they were being watched. The air grew colder, and she could hear distant whispers echoing off the stone walls. Whatever lay ahead, she knew it wouldn't be easy.
But for now, all that mattered was surviving this nightmare - and finding a way to save their friend before it was too late.
