Merrin gasps as she hauls herself onto the ledge, her muscles burning with exhaustion. "We made it!" she chokes out, looking back at the churning water below where the tentacle had just attacked them. Varikka scrambles up beside her, both collapsing in a heap.

They catch their breath for a moment before Merrin speaks again. "What...what was that thing?" Her voice trembles slightly as she processes what they've just survived.

Varikka shakes her head, equally shaken. "I don't know," she manages between gasps. "But I think we just found the reason this place has been sealed away for centuries."*

The massive cavern stretches above them, a yawning darkness filled with skeletal remains and glowing eyes that watch their every move. Merrin clutches Varikka's arm tightly. "We're not alone down here," she hums urgently.

As if in response, a deep rumbling voice echoes through the chamber. "Fools! You have awakened that which should remain sleeping!"*

A robed figure emerges from the shadows - ancient and bent, its face hidden beneath a heavy cowl. "The Devourer of Light has tasted mortal flesh once more," the figure intones, its voice layered with age and sorrow. "It will not be satisfied until it has consumed all that remains here."*

Merrin scrambles to her feet, pulling Varikka up beside her. "Who are you?" she demands. "And what the hell is a Devourer of Light?"*

The figure's head tilts slightly in an unnerving motion. "I am Elric, The Hermit," it replies. "Once a guardian of this sacred place, now merely...a witness to its corruption." The voice shifts, becoming more urgent. "The creature you encountered - it feeds on light and magic, growing stronger with each meal. You must leave before..."

Elric's words are cut off as the water beside them erupts violently once more. Another massive tentacle bursts from the depths, glistening with slime and writhing with an otherworldly energy. Merrin barely has time to register its horrifying appearance - a grotesque mass of flesh and shadow, pulsing with malevolent power - before it lashes out at them.

She throws herself against Varikka, driving both of them off the ledge just as the tentacle crashes down where they stood moments before. They plummet into the icy water below, the force of the impact knocking the breath from Merrin's lungs. She surfaces gasping, her vision blurred and her body screaming in protest.

Merrin looks up, spotting Varikka nearby and swimming towards her with desperate strokes. "Are you okay?" she calls out, her voice barely audible over the rushing water and groaning stone around them.

Varikka nods, though she's clearly shaken. "I think so," she manages. "What...what was that thing?"

Merrin shakes her head, still processing what they've just experienced. "I don't know," she admits. "But I think we just found the reason this place has been sealed away for centuries." She looks around quickly, taking in their surroundings once more. The cavern is massive, stretching high above them with skeletal remains scattered across the shore and floating in the water. But what truly chills her blood are the dozens of glowing eyes peering at them from the darkness all around.

She clutches Varikka's arm tightly. "We're not alone down here," she hums urgently.

As if to prove her point, a deep, rumbling voice echoes through the cavern. "Fools! You have awakened that which should remain sleeping!"*
