Round 113

Phase: escalating

Merrin dove into the churning depths of the subterranean lake, her wiry halfling frame cutting through the water with desperate determination. The icy liquid closed around her, stealing her breath as she plunged after Varikka's vanishing form. Her exhausted muscles screamed in protest, but the thought of her friend drowning drove her forward. She'd managed to snag Jeane's fallen torch before it vanished downstream—now it bobbed uselessly in her grip while both hands kept her afloat on the makeshift debris raft.
Across the rapidly flooding chamber, Seraphine had somehow scrambled up onto a narrow ledge halfway up the wall, pressed flat against stone like a terrified kitten trying to disappear into plaster and mortar. Her robes clung to every curve, dark hair streaming water down her back, face pale with shock and fear as she screamed something Merrin couldn't hear over the roar of rushing water and groaning stone. The wizardette's terror was palpable even from across the churning pool.
Merrin redoubled her grip on her floating debris, kicking hard to stay afloat despite exhaustion screaming through every muscle. The water was already above her waist now, rising fast as it poured in through new cracks in the walls and floor. She could feel the current tugging at her, trying to pull her downstream toward the?..
The tentacle! Merrin's eyes widened as she spotted the massive limb thrashing through the water, its suckers leaving trails of muck and debris in its wake. Varikka's body had disappeared beneath the surface, but now the creature was clearly visible, its monstrous form partially emerging from the depths to pursue her friend. The halfling's heart raced, her breath coming in short, sharp gasps as she forced herself to push forward through the freezing water.
The current was strong, the lake's depths dark and murky, but Merrin couldn't let fear hold her back. Not when Varikka needed her. She dove down, her lungs burning with the need for air, her eyes straining against the darkness. The water pressure increased, making it harder to swim, harder to think. But she...
I feel a chill run down my spine as I watch Varikka disappear beneath the churning waves. My heart races, my breath coming in short, sharp gasps as I force myself to push forward through the freezing water. The current is strong, the lake's depths dark and murky, but I can't let fear hold me back. Not when Varikka needs me. I dive down, my lungs burning with the need for air, my eyes straining against the darkness.
I see it! A massive tentacle thrashing through the water, its suckers leaving trails of muck and debris in its wake. Varikka's body is gone, but now the creature is clearly visible, its monstrous form partially emerging from the depths to pursue her friend. Oh gods, what do I do? The water pressure increases, making it harder to swim, harder to think. But I can't just give up...
I surface for a moment, gasping for air. The tentacle is moving fast, cutting through the water with terrifying speed. I have to act now! I spot a large piece of debris floating nearby—a section of collapsed wall or ceiling, maybe—and I swim toward it, grabbing on with one hand while keeping my makeshift raft in the other. If I can just...
I dive back down, pushing off from the debris with all my strength. The current catches me, pulling me downstream faster than I expected. No! I struggle to maintain control, kicking hard and angling my body to steer toward where Varikka vanished. The water is dark and churning, visibility almost nonexistent...
I spot something moving in the depths below—a massive form, humanoid in shape but with too many limbs. The creature! It's huge, easily twice the size of a man, its skin pale and luminescent in the gloom. It's pulling Varikka deeper... Panic rises in my chest as I watch it drag her further into the abyss.
I surface again, taking a deep breath. Okay, think! I need something to cut those tentacles, some way to free Varikka without getting pulled in myself. The crossbow won't work underwater, and even if it did, I'd need a clear shot... My eyes fall on the heavy mace still strapped to my back. Maybe if I can get close enough...
I start swimming downstream, using the current to gain speed while maintaining control with practiced strokes. If I can just get beneath that thing, maybe I can smash its limbs or at least create a distraction... The water rushes past me, cold and unforgiving, but adrenaline fuels my movements now.
The creature surfaces for a moment, its grotesque head breaking the surface before diving back down. It's moving! Changing direction, perhaps? I redouble my efforts, swimming as fast as my exhausted muscles will allow. The mace feels heavy on my back, but it's my best chance...
I spot another piece of debris—a large, sharp-edged stone—and I angle toward it. If I can just grab this... I reach out, fingers closing around the rough surface. Now to turn around and dive back down...
The stone is heavy, but I manage to spin it in the water, using it like a makeshift shield or club. Okay, deep breath. I take a huge gulp of air and plunge back beneath the surface.*
The world goes dark and cold as I descend into the depths. The pressure builds in my ears, and for a moment I panic, wanting to surface again. But then I spot it—the massive form of the creature, its tentacles writhing around Varikka's unconscious body as it pulls her deeper into the lake.*
I swim toward them, the stone held out before me like a battering ram. Come on, come on... The water resistance is incredible, every movement a struggle against the pressure and current.* I'm not going to make it in time at this rate...
With a final burst of speed, I propel myself forward, the stone impacting one of the creature's tentacles with a satisfying crunch. Yes! The limb recoils, releasing its grip on Varikka for a moment.*
The creature turns toward me, its multiple eyes glowing with malevolent intent. Oh shit... I'm too close now, caught in its sphere of influence. The current grabs me, pulling me away from Varikka and toward the monster's central mass.
I struggle frantically, trying to swim sideways or backward, but it's no use. The pressure is too great! I feel myself being dragged inexorably toward those waiting tentacles...*
