Round 226

Phase: escalating

The chamber shuddered around them with increasing violence, the very stone groaning in protest as it began its slow, inexorable collapse. Varrika's scarred hands clawed at empty air where her mace had slipped away yet again, clattering uselessly onto the shifting ground below. The Figure in Shimmering Light remained motionless across the narrowing gap, its burning eyes fixed unnervingly on them both. It hadn't moved, hadn't reacted to the collapsing chamber or Merrin's crossbow aimed directly at it. That unnatural stillness was more unsettling than any threat it might pose.
Merrin shifted her weight nervously, trying to maintain balance as the ledge bucked beneath her boots. "Varrika, we need to move!" she shouted over the rumbling noise, her voice tight with anxiety. The ground was shaking violently now, and she could feel the entire structure giving way around them. We have to get out of here, and fast. She took a step forward, crossbow trained on the Figure ahead, heart pounding in her chest.
Varrika fought for grip on the crumbling stone, muscles straining as another violent tremor wracked the ledge. The ground shifted sickeningly beneath her feet, and she felt herself starting to slide. Merrin! She lunged forward instinctively, grabbing for her friend just as the stone gave way completely. Her hands closed around Merrin's arm, and they both tumbled off the collapsing ledge into empty space.
The world dissolved into chaos as gravity seized them, pulling them down through swirling darkness. Varrika clung desperately to Merrin, her powerful arms locked around the smaller woman's frame as they plummeted through the unstable dimension. The magical seals pulsed faster, brighter, and she felt a surge of raw power building around them—activation imminent.
Merrin screamed as they fell, her grip on the crossbow tightening reflexively before it slipped free in their descent. She wrapped both arms around Varrika's waist instead, burying her face against the dwarf woman's armored chest. The wind roared past them, and she felt a sickening lurch as something unseen caught their fall—hopefully solid ground rather than another trap.
They hit the floor hard, momentum carrying them several feet before they skidded to a stop in a cloud of dust. Varrika rolled onto her back, gasping for air and checking herself for injuries. Merrin lay half on top of her, crossbow clattering away as she tried to catch her breath. "What... what just happened?" the halfling wheezed, looking around at their new surroundings with wide, terrified eyes.
Varrika sat up slowly, wincing at various bruises and scrapes from the fall. She looked around, taking in their new environment—a small chamber lit by strange bioluminescent fungi growing on the walls. The air was thick with dust and the smell of ancient stone, but there were no immediate signs of further collapse or obvious threats. At least not yet.
She turned her attention back to Merrin, reaching out to help the halfling sit up properly. "We fell through the dimension," she said grimly, brushing dust from her armor. "The seals activated somehow—probably when we went through—and it brought us here." She paused, listening intently. "I don't hear the collapse anymore. We're... somewhere else now." Somewhere else indeed. But where? And what had they just triggered by falling through that unstable gateway?
Merrin took her offered hand, wincing as she sat up fully and assessing her own injuries with a quick glance. Nothing serious, thank the gods—just bruises and scrapes like Varrika's. She brushed herself off, looking around at their new surroundings with growing unease. "Well," she said finally, "at least we're not falling anymore." She tried for a smile but it came out more like a grimace.
Varrika nodded, already moving to retrieve her mace from where it had fallen nearby. The familiar weight of the weapon in her hands was comforting, even if her palms were still slick with sweat from their near-fatal plummet. "Let's find out where 'here' is," she said, voice tight with tension as she scanned the chamber for exits or potential threats. "And hope it's not worse than what we just left."
