The chamber rumbled again, a low growl that seemed to vibrate through Merrin's bones. She gripped her mace tighter, the familiar weight a small comfort in the face of the unknown. The pit yawned wider, revealing more of the darkness below, and she took an involuntary step back.

Varrika hung suspended above it all, a powerful statue trapped in magic's embrace. Her magical seals pulsed faster now, a warning of impending activation. A low rumble echoed through the pit, and she realized with growing dread that something was changing down there.

The air seemed to thicken with anticipation, and the faint whispering grew louder, more insistent. "Merrin," Varrika called out, her voice strained but firm. "Whatever you're going to do, do it quickly. I don't think this field is meant to last much longer."

Merrin nodded, her quick halfling eyes scanning the area for any sign of a solution. The glowing stone at the pit's center pulsed with an ominous energy, its message seeming to shift and writhe in the dim light.

"The Voice said the answer lies in what binds us together," she muttered, more to herself than to Varrika. Her hand instinctively reached for her mace again, fingers wrapping around its solid weight.

"But what if that's not what it means at all?" The words were hushed, almost reverent as they left her lips. She took another step closer to the pit, her gaze fixed on the stone. The ground shifted beneath her feet once more, and she froze, heart pounding.

Something was changing down there—something big.
