The forest beyond the mirror's reflection was no ordinary woods. The trees twisted unnaturally, their branches reaching out like grasping fingers, bark scored with symbols that seemed to writhe in the dim light. Every rustle of leaves carried a malevolent weight, every shadow seemed to watch them pass with hungry eyes. Merrin's quick halfling eyes scanned the darkness, searching for any sign of movement or threat. Varrika stood beside her like a stone statue, her powerful dwarf frame tense and ready despite the exhaustion evident in the set of her shoulders.

"What is this place?" Merrin hissed, more to herself than to her companion. The silence seemed to answer her with a thousand whispered threats that never quite formed into words. The ground beneath their feet felt wrong somehow, unstable and shifting as though the very earth was alive and hostile to their presence. Every branch that reached out like a grasping finger, every shadow that seemed to watch them pass with hungry eyes—it all conspired to make Merrin’s skin crawl.

Varrika remained silent, her face set in a grim mask of concentration. She knew better than to speak when there were unseen dangers lurking in the dark heart of this forest. The two women moved forward cautiously, their senses on high alert for any sign of movement or danger. The air grew thicker with each step, heavy with an ancient magic that seemed to cling to everything it touched.

Merrin’s keen eyes scanned the shadows ahead, searching for any sign of the magical force field that had trapped Varrika earlier. But all she could see was the oppressive darkness and the twisted trees that loomed over them like malevolent guardians.
