Phase: escalating

The pool's surface rippled violently as Seraphine's staff blazed brighter, casting stark shadows that writhed across the stalactites. The elf woman stumbled back against the wall, her face contorted in fear as she cried out. "Jeane! It's—it's inside me! Something's gripping my thoughts!" A dark shape began to coalesce from the pool's depths—a thing of ancient malevolence that seemed to feed on the very magic they'd used to find this place.
"Seraphine!" Jeane rushed forward and caught the elf woman before she could fall, her arms wrapping protectively around her. The magical energy pulsed again, stronger this time, and Jeane felt a cold dread settle in her stomach. They were standing on the edge of something ancient and powerful—something that had been waiting for intruders to stumble into its domain.
The figure in the pool seemed to lean forward, as if sensing their renewed resistance. Its face remained hidden by shadows, but Jeane could feel its attention shifting between them, assessing each in turn. The air crackled with barely contained power, and the very stones of the cavern seemed to hum with anticipation.
"What choice is it asking us to make?" Jeane asked, her voice tight with controlled fear as she helped Seraphine regain her footing. The elf woman's body trembled against her, and Jeane could feel the rapid beat of her heart. Whatever this thing was, whatever it wanted from them—she knew they couldn't afford to underestimate its power.
Seraphine took a shuddering breath, her eyes still fixed on the pool's surface. "The choice... it's about sacrifice," she gasped, her voice strained and urgent. "It wants to know if we'd give up what matters most for survival. And I think... I think it's already inside my mind somehow."
Jeane's grip tightened around Seraphine's shoulders as a fresh wave of dread washed over her. They were trapped in a collapsing cavern, miles underground, with no clear way out—and now they were facing a magical entity that seemed intent on exploiting their deepest fears and desires. The stakes had just gotten significantly higher.
"Stay close," Jeane murmured, her voice barely above a whisper as she scanned the chamber for any other potential threats. "We face this together." She knew that whatever came next, they'd need to rely on each other completely—because the alternative was unthinkable.
