The cavern air crackled with power as Seraphine's staff blazed brighter, casting stark shadows that writhed across the stalactites. The pool surface rippled violently, and a dark shape began to coalesce from its depths—a thing of ancient malevolence that seemed to feed on the very magic they'd used to find this place.

"Jeane!" Seraphine cried out, her voice tight with fear as she stumbled back against the wall. "It's—it's inside me! Something's gripping my thoughts!"

The entity spoke then, its voice a chorus of a thousand whispers that seemed to echo directly inside their skulls: "CHOOSE."

Jeane rushed forward and caught Seraphine before she could fall, her arms wrapping protectively around the elf woman. The magical energy pulsed again, stronger this time, and Jeane felt a cold dread settle in her stomach. They were standing on the edge of something ancient and powerful—something that had been waiting for intruders to stumble into its domain.

The figure in the pool seemed to lean forward, as if sensing their renewed resistance. Its face remained hidden by shadows, but Jeane could feel an intelligence behind those unseen eyes—an entity that was far more dangerous than mere stone or water.

"What do we do?" Seraphine whispered, her body trembling against Jeane's. The wizard's staff still glowed, casting flickering shadows across the cavern walls, but its usual comforting light now seemed somehow... wrong.

Jeane's mind raced, weighing their options. They could try to fight whatever was in the pool—though her magic remained suppressed and Seraphine's spellcasting had already proven unreliable. They could attempt to flee back through the unstable tunnels, but the collapsing structure behind them made retreat treacherous at best. Or they could...

The entity spoke again, its voice echoing through the cavern: "CHOOSE."

Jeane's grip on Seraphine tightened as they both flinched at the sound. The magical energy pulsed once more, stronger still this time. They were out of options—trapped between a collapsing tunnel and an ancient entity that demanded a decision.

"Seraphine," Jeane said firmly, meeting the wizard's eyes despite her fear. "We can't fight it, we can't flee back, and we can't stay here forever. Whatever this thing wants, we have to give it something."

Seraphine nodded shakily, understanding the grim reality. The entity hissed again: "CHOOSE."

Jeane took a deep breath and straightened her shoulders. "We choose," she said, her voice echoing in the cavern. "Tell us what you want."
