The base of the tower looms, a monument to forgotten power and present hunger. The night air grows heavy with the scent of old stone and older magic. Seraphine begins her casting, hands raised, eyes closed, face set in concentration. The spell unfolds around her in visible waves—ward signatures pulsing across the ancient walls like veins of corruption beneath skin.

Merrin moves with practiced stealth, circling clockwise, marking every point where the stone breathes wrong or hums with anticipation. Her parchment fills with meticulous diagrams and notes: predatory resonance here, pressure plate masked as stone texture there, magical tripwire at forty-five degrees along this edge. She pauses, looking up at the tower's hungry facade.

Varrika stands guard near the entrance, mace ready, her dwarf instincts screaming warnings. The air tastes wrong here—something ancient and ravenous feeding on the very magic of the place. She shifts her weight, eyes scanning the darkness for movement.

The spell completes. Seraphine opens her eyes, stepping back from the revealed horror. "This isn't defensive magic," she says, voice tight. "It's parasitic. The wards are actively feeding off something inside the tower—something powerful." She looks at Merrin and Varrika in turn. "We need to map every inch of this before we even think about going in. Stepping into those wards blind could mean instant death—or worse."

Merrin meets her gaze, nodding slowly. "I've got the ward signatures marked, but I need more time to fully map the patterns." She glances at the tower looming overhead. "And I'm starting to wonder if we should even be messing with this place. Whatever's inside... it's not just a forgotten sword anymore."

Varrika grunts, her grip tightening on the mace. "We didn't come all this way to turn tail and run because of some hungry magic. But she's right—we need to know what we're dealing with before we go stumbling into a death trap." She looks at Seraphine. "Can you extend that mapping spell? Give us more time?"

Seraphine nods, already raising her hands again. "I can maintain the visualization for another hour, maybe two if I'm careful. But the longer we stay here with active wards, the higher the risk of detection." She begins the maintenance incantation, ward signatures pulsing stronger around the tower.

Merrin resumes her mapping, moving methodically now, each mark on the parchment more precise than the last. The stakes have risen—this isn't just about retrieving a legendary sword anymore. It's about navigating an ancient, predatory magic that feeds on something far more dangerous than mere intruders.

Varrika keeps watch, her instincts screaming warnings with every pulse of the ward magic. They need to proceed carefully, but the tower's hunger grows more apparent with each passing moment. Whatever lies inside... it's worth more than just a sword.

The night deepens around them, the tower's predatory presence growing stronger. Time is running out—either they complete their mapping and find a way in, or the wards detect them and whatever hungry thing lies within awakens to their intrusion. The choice hangs heavy in the air, as thick and suffocating as the magic that pulses beneath the ancient stone.
