The tower's base looms overhead, a monument to forgotten power and present hunger. The night air grows heavy with the scent of old stone and older magic. Halie begins her casting, hands raised, eyes closed, face set in concentration. The spell unfolds around her in visible waves—ward signatures pulsing across the ancient walls like veins of corruption beneath skin.

Merrin moves with practiced stealth, circling clockwise, marking every point where the stone breathes wrong or hums with anticipation. Her parchment fills with meticulous diagrams and notes: predatory resonance here, pressure plate masked as stone texture there, magical tripwire at forty-five degrees along this edge. She pauses by a particularly thick concentration of dark energy, her expression grim.

Jeane beats her powerful wings slowly, maintaining altitude just above the ground, arcane senses extended to their full range. The magic feels alive, yes—but not mindless. It thinks. It waits. It feeds. Her eyes narrow as she spots the telltale signs of something even worse than traps: the magical equivalent of a feeding tube, pumping energy from deep within the tower outward to sustain the ward system. This isn't just defense—it's life support for whatever lies at the center.

The three women work in tense coordination, each contributing their unique skills to unraveling the tower's defenses before they become active threats. But every moment spent mapping and analyzing adds to the growing certainty that something ancient and powerful sleeps within, something that has been feeding on its own dark power for centuries—and may not take kindly to interruption.

The night deepens around them, the air growing colder, the stone groaning softly as if in anticipation of fresh prey. The decision remains unmade: breach now while they're prepared but exhausted, or wait until dawn when they'll be rested but potentially discovered by whatever else moves in these lands. The tower's magic pulses hungrily, offering no easy answers.
