The stone floor beneath them trembled with a low rumble that seemed to come from everywhere and nowhere at once. The ancient magic pulsed again, brighter this time, casting eerie shadows across the room as if the very walls were breathing. Varrika's crossbow bolt had struck true twice, but the skeleton remained standing, its hollow eye sockets fixed on Halie with an unnatural hunger.
Halie dropped to her knees at the pit's edge, torch held high, peering into the abyss below. "Jeane! Answer me! Are you hurt?" Her voice echoed off smooth stone walls that seemed to absorb sound rather than reflect it. The flickering light revealed nothing but a sheer drop into darkness, save for the faintest glint of something metallic far below—too deep to make out clearly.
"I'm here, Varrika," Halie called back, her face pale in the torchlight. "But I can't see anything in this damn pit! Someone fetch another torch—three of them—and we'll make this hellhole brighter than a festival market." Her free hand gripped the edge tightly, knuckles white with tension.
Varrika crouched beside Halie, crossbow aimed into the darkness, every muscle coiled for action. "Jeane!" she shouted, her gravel voice barely carrying over the oppressive silence. "Are you hurt? Can you hear me?" She strained to catch any sound from below, but only heard the faintest scrape of stone against stone.
The air grew colder still, stealing what little warmth remained in the chamber. Something shifted deep within the pit—stone grinding against stone, or something else moving through rubble. Varrika's scarred face tightened, eyes narrowing as she scanned the shadows for any sign of movement. She could feel it—the wrongness of this place seeping into her bones like old blood.
Seraphine's voice rang out from behind them, sharp with urgency. "Varrika, get that rope ready! We need to get Halie and Jeane out of there now." Varrika nodded sharply, already reaching for the thick hemp coil slung across her back. But her instincts screamed warnings—something ancient and hungry had awakened in these depths.
Deep within the pit, Jeane's crimson eyes strained against the darkness as she tried to make sense of what she was seeing—or rather, what she wasn't. Is anyone there? Her voice echoed off stone walls that seemed to absorb sound rather than reflect it. Can you see an opening anywhere in this damn pit?
The air here was thin and cold, stealing her breath with each passing moment. Her head ached from the sudden pressure change when she'd fallen through the floor panel above. I need air soon or a way out of here before whatever made those sounds decides to investigate the noise we're making.
She pressed herself against one smooth stone wall, wings tucked tightly against her back—they were useless in this cramped space anyway. The torchlight flickered weakly across curving walls that descended deeper into darkness below. I heard something move—stone grinding against stone, but... different somehow. Heavier. Deliberate.
Jeane's powerful muscles trembled with exhaustion and fear. She wasn't used to feeling helpless like this—not trapped in an enemy's lair with no escape route visible and her magic rendered useless by the ancient wards. If they don't get me out of here soon, I'm going to run out of air or whatever's down here is going to find me.
She drew a shuddering breath, trying to calm her racing heart. The stone floor beneath her felt unnaturally cold—like it was leeching warmth from her body. Focus, Jeane. You're the most powerful spellcaster in this party. Think. There has to be a way out of here that doesn't involve begging for rescue.
Her gaze swept across the walls again, more carefully this time. Something glinted near the bottom—metal? A weapon? Or something far worse? What the hell is that? She whispered, squinting into the darkness.
Halie
Varrika
Jeane
