Phase: converging

The ancient magic pulsed again, its light brighter now, casting flickering shadows across the chamber walls that seemed to writhe with an unsettling life of their own. Varrika's crossbow bolts had struck true twice, but the skeleton remained standing, its hollow eye sockets fixed on Halie with an unnatural hunger. The creature's bones creaked as it took another step forward, closing the distance between them with a deliberate, purposeful gait that spoke of something far older and more terrible than mere decay.
Halie dropped to her knees at the pit's edge, torch held high, peering into the abyss below. "Jeane! Answer me! Are you hurt?" Her voice echoed off smooth stone walls that seemed to absorb sound rather than reflect it. The flickering light revealed nothing but a sheer drop into darkness, save for the faintest glint of something metallic far below—too deep to make out clearly. "I'm here, Varrika," Halie called back, her face pale in the torchlight. "But I can't see anything in this damn pit! Someone fetch another torch—three of them—and we'll make this hellhole brighter than a festival market." Her free hand gripped the edge tightly, knuckles white with tension.
Merrin's hands trembled as she fumbled with the tinderbox, the flint striking sparks against steel in the darkness. "Come on, you infernal contraption," she muttered under her breath, willing a spark to catch and bloom into flame. Her ears strained for any sound from below, any hint of Jeane's presence or the nature of the pit that swallowed her whole. The heavy tread of Varrika's boots at the edge of the abyss sent a shudder through Merrin's frame, belying her attempts at bravado. "Jeane!" she hissed into the darkness, her voice barely louder than a whisper.
The ward's pulse has faded entirely now—something has broken its rhythm completely. Jeane's head throbs from the pressure change when she'd fallen through. The stone floor beneath her shifted again, this time accompanied by a low groan from somewhere deeper below. A fresh sound echoed through the hidden pit: the creaking of wooden beams, followed by the faint scratching of claws against stone. Whatever made those sounds earlier is getting closer. The darkness seems to be drawing in, like a living thing contracting around her.
I'm alive down here—just barely. The pit is deep, the air is thin, and my head feels like it was split by an axe. Something shifted under me just now—not stone grinding against stone. Something organic moved. Get that rope down here fast—there's something living in this darkness with me, and I don't think it wants company.
The heavy stone floor quakes beneath my boots as I crouch at the edge of this cursed pit. "Jeane!" I roar into the darkness, my gravel-voice echoing off the damp walls. "Can ye hear me? What in the nine hells is down there?" My crossbow is poised to fire at any sign of movement. The runes on these ancient walls stopped their pulsing after Jeane landed—whatever danger they warned of seems broken or distracted by something bigger now. "Get that rope ready," I growl over my shoulder at Halie.
The tinderbox finally catches, and Merrin cups her hands around the tiny flame, shielding it from the oppressive darkness. The light barely penetrates the shadows, but it's something—anything. She edges closer to the pit's edge, heart pounding, and calls down: "Jeane? Can you hear me? Are you hurt?" Her voice echoes back, distorted by the sheer stone walls that seem to swallow sound whole.
