The ward pulsed actively as they approached the tower base, no longer merely a dead remnant but something fed by recent dark magic. The air inside smelled of old stone and older death, mixed with the sharp ozone scent of fresh enchantment. Jeane’s senses prickled with alarm—this wasn’t ancient decay, this was active corruption.

"Merrin," she whispered, her voice barely carrying over the wind, "keep that crossbow ready but don't fire unless absolutely necessary. We need to map these skeleton patrols first before we stumble into their command center." Her wings shifted restlessly behind her, a subconscious gesture of unease.

Merrin nodded, her halfling form tense as she aimed the weapon into the shadows beyond the doorway. The air was thick with the wrongness of it all, something ancient and hungry made fresh by dark magic. "I can feel it," she hissed back, her dark eyes scanning the darkness. "Something's feeding this foul presence."

Varrika moved forward, her dwarf form solid and reassuring despite the exhaustion evident in every line of her body. She raised a fist silently, signaling the others to hold formation and stay quiet. The weight of this place pressed down like a shroud, wrongness in the air seeping into bones. Not just decay, but something active.

Halie stepped closer to Merrin instinctively, her mace gripped tightly in one hand while the other clutched her silver holy symbol. She could feel it too—the tower's heartbeat, wrong and hungry. The ward wasn't dead, someone was feeding it. This was no simple ruin. "Merrin," she breathed, "keep your cross steady but don't fire until you see bone move. Jeane, if you can trace that magic, do it quickly and quietly. We need to know what's expecting us before it wakes up."

Seraphine stood at the edge of their small camp, the flickering firelight casting long shadows across the crumbling stones of the tower's base. The air here was thick with the weight of history, a tangible presence that pressed down like a shroud. It was more than just decay; there was a wrongness to it, a foul and hungry energy seeping into her bones. Her fingers traced patterns in the air, trying to read the currents of power flowing through the stones.

The wind carried no sound from within—the silence was too perfect, too complete. Something ancient and terrible lay waiting inside, something that had been awakened recently by dark magic. The party stood at the threshold, hearts pounding with apprehension and adrenaline, knowing they had found what they sought but also knowing the true danger had only just begun.
