The stones of the ancient tower groaned under their own weight, a sound that had likely echoed through these halls for centuries before the dark magic began its work. The ward pulsed again, stronger this time, and the air inside grew heavy with the stink of decay and wrongness. Merrin's crossbow bolts had punched through the lead skeleton's skulls, shattering bone and dropping them in pieces—but more immediately filled the gaps, their movements coordinated like soldiers on a battlefield rather than the mindless undead we expected.

Jeane stepped forward, her crimson eyes scanning the shadows, wings half-spread for balance. "I can feel it too—something's changed in this place," she said, voice low. "The magic feels fresh, directed. Whatever's animating these things now... it's not just some ancient spell lingering." Her gaze flicked to Merrin. "Keep that crossbow ready but don't fire unless absolutely necessary. We need to map skeleton patrol routes first, identify any command centers before deeper entry."

Merrin nodded, finger light on the trigger as she kept her aim steady into the darkness ahead. The corridor stretched out before them, stone walls slick with moisture and shadowed by centuries of dust. "Got it," she whispered back. "But Halie—" She broke off, glancing at their cleric friend. "Whatever's down there, it feels... wrong. Different from the usual mindless undead shit."

Halie shifted her grip on the heavy mace, silver holy symbol clutched in her other hand. Her blue-grey eyes scanned the corridor with practiced vigilance, seeking any sign of further threat. "Merrin, keep that crossbow ready but don't fire unless absolutely necessary; we need to understand what's changed before we act." She turned to Jeane, voice low. "Can you sense the source of this? We need to know if we're dealing with some necromancer getting greedy or... something worse."

The succubus sorcerer closed her eyes briefly, concentrating. When she opened them again, they gleamed crimson in the gloom. "I can feel it—multiple sources, layered over each other like paint over rot. Fresh dark magic, recent work, but built on top of something older." She frowned. "Whatever's down there, it's not just some amateur necromancer. This kind of coordination... someone's put thought into this defense system."

Varrika stepped forward then, her scarred face set in a grim expression. The dwarf warrior's hand tightened on the heavy mace she carried. "Halie, Merrin—stay sharp," she growled. "Jeane, if you can feel that magic, trace it back to its source. We need to know what we're up against before we stumble into an ambush." She glanced around at the party, weathered face showing concern beneath the stern expression. "The tower's magic feels wrong—recent dark energy feeding old enchantments. Skeletons likely active inside. Need to prepare for close-quarters undead combat."

The ward pulsed again, a sickening throb that seemed to echo through the very stones. Merrin shivered despite herself, crossbow never wavering from its aim into the darkness ahead. "Got it," she whispered back. "But Halie—" She broke off, glancing at their cleric friend. "Whatever's down there, it feels... wrong. Different from the usual mindless undead shit."
