Round 15

Phase: escalating

The ward pulsed again, stronger this time, and the air inside the crumbling tower grew heavy with the stink of decay and wrongness. Merrin's crossbow bolts had punched through the lead skeleton's skulls, shattering bone and dropping them in pieces—but more immediately filled the gaps, their movements coordinated like soldiers on a battlefield rather than the mindless undead we expected. The air reeks of decay and wrongness, and my skin crawls with the sensation of being watched by ancient, malevolent eyes.
Someone has to answer that change now. Jeane steps forward, her crimson eyes scanning the shadows, wings half-spread for balance. "I can feel it too—something's changed in this place since we last came here," she says, voice low. "The ward isn't just decaying, it's being fed." Her gaze fixes on the fresh wave of skeletons emerging from deeper within the tower. "Those aren't shambling anymore; they're moving with purpose, coordinated."
Merrin flinches but keeps her crossbow aimed carefully, fingers tense on the trigger mechanism. Halie moves to cover her flank, mace held ready, face set in grim determination despite obvious fatigue. The weary human woman's blue-grey eyes meet Jeane's for a moment—silent communication passing between them. She nods almost imperceptibly.
Jeane turns to Varrika next, issuing quiet instructions through hand signals and barely audible words. The rogue moves with practiced stealth, melting into the shadows to relay orders to the rest of the party scattered around the tower's base. "Merrin," Jeane continues, voice barely above a whisper, "keep that crossbow ready but don't fire unless absolutely necessary. We need to map their patrol routes first before we commit to anything."
Her attention shifts back to Halie, and there's something almost hungry in her expression—this is the kind of ancient mystery she lives for, the thrill of unraveling dark secrets balanced against mortal danger. "Halie," Jeane says, "I'll try to trace this fresh magic pulse upstairs. If something's directing these skeletons..."
The cleric's face tightens with worry, but she answers with steady calm. "I approach carefully, my heavy mace in hand." The weight of this place presses down—something foul and hungry living beneath the stone. Merrin, keep your crossbow ready but don't fire without a clear threat. Jeane, can you sense what's feeding this thing? We need to know what we're dealing with before it notices us.
