Round 12

Phase: escalating

The stone tower's ward pulsed with fresh power—as if something ancient had just awakened and taken notice. The air inside felt wrong—heavy and thick, resisting their passage like water. Each breath tasted of dust and decay, and beneath that, something else. Something ancient and hungry.
Jeane's wings shifted restlessly behind her, a instinctive reaction to the magic crawling across her skin. "This place is... alive," Halie whispered, clutching her mace tighter. The wiry halfling scout woman beside her nodded grimly, crossbow held ready but not yet aimed at anything specific. Merrin's dark eyes scanned the shadows ahead, searching for movement.
"Fresh magic," Seraphine said softly, her blue-grey eyes fixed on a patch of wall where faint runes glowed with recent activation. "Not decayed power—this ward is being maintained." The elf woman's sharp gaze flicked to Jeane. "Someone—or something—is keeping these defenses active."
"Or reactivating them," the succubus woman corrected, her crimson eyes narrowing as she studied the same glowing symbols. Her dark wings shifted again, muscles tensing beneath pale skin stretched tight over powerful curves. "Whatever's in here isn't just undead leftovers. These defenses are... responding to our presence."
The air grew colder—fresher magic bleeding through the decay like ice water. Merrin felt her finger tighten on the crossbow trigger instinctively, but Jeane's voice cut across the sudden tension. "Easy. We need eyes first, not bolts." The tall winged woman moved forward slowly, her voluptuous form a stark contrast to Merrin's compact build as she carefully approached the wall runes.
Halie stayed close to Merrin, her own grip tightening on the heavy mace. The human cleric wasn't used to this kind of magic—something ancient and wrong that made her skin crawl. But she trusted the halfling scout beside her, and followed her lead without question.
"Something's moving," Jeane whispered suddenly, and everyone froze. Her crimson eyes had fixed on a patch of deeper shadow near the tower's base—a space that seemed to swallow light instead of reflecting it. And then they saw them: bone-white shapes detaching from the darkness like smoke solidified into humanoid form.
Skeletons. But these moved with a coordination that spoke of command, not mindless hunger. They formed a line across the entrance—six figures in rusted armor, weapons still clutched in bone-fingered grips. And behind them, deeper inside the tower, something else stirred. A presence that made the ward pulse again, stronger this time.
"Shit," Merrin breathed, her crossbow coming up instinctively even as Jeane hissed "Hold!" The skeletons shifted formation in response to their presence—moving like soldiers on a battlefield rather than the shambling undead they'd expected. Someone—or something—had these bones riled up and organized.
The succubus woman's wings snapped tight against her back, muscles coiling for combat even as she kept her voice low and steady. "Keep your eyes peeled," she muttered to Varrika and Halie. "Something's got these bones riled up." The air inside the tower reeked of decay and wrongness, and her skin crawled with the sensation of fresh dark magic bleeding through ancient wards.
But they'd come this far for a reason—the legendary Time-Splitting Sword waited somewhere inside these walls. And Jeane wasn't about to let a few coordinated skeletons stop them now. Not when she could feel the power humming beneath her fingertips, ready to unleash hell if needed.
