At The base of a crumbling stone tower, its entrance sealed by an ancient rune-covered gate, deep within the haunted Whispering Woods., the pressure shifts from waiting to immediate risk. The ward answers the party's presence with a fresh pulse through the stone and no one can mistake it for safety. The nearest sign of danger is now Skeletons: Undead remnants of the tower's original defenders, now animated by dark magic to endlessly guard their ancient home.. Someone has to answer that change now.

Jeane

Jeane · Sorcerer

The stone rune beneath my boot pulses again with fresh dark energy. Interesting. The tower remembers visitors. I draw my crossbow smoothly, thumb checking the bolt mechanism while my eyes scan the crumbling gateway for movement. Halie, Merrin—you two take point to either side of the door. Varrika and Seraphine, guard our flanks. I'll hold center with covering fire if needed. The ancient stone seems to exhale dust as we approach. Whatever animated these defenses last night was substantial magic. We should expect more than just bone piles ahead. I check my tinderbox, ensuring it's secure—fire might be our best friend or worst enemy in here. Stay sharp. Skeletons are mindless but they're still undead. Silver works better than iron against them. My wings shift slightly beneath the cloak, restless at being contained. If we get swarmed, I can fly clear for a moment to rain fire down on them—buying us space—but that leaves me exposed above ground level where any archers might be waiting. I don't mention the obvious: once airborne, I'm a target. Let's move fast and brutal. Merrin, what's your read on those locks?

Halie

Halie · Cleric

I approach the door carefully, my mace in hand and my crossbow slung across my back. I'm not foolish enough to charge into a tomb without some protection. The stone rune beneath Jeane's boot pulses again with fresh dark energy, and I can feel it too—a low hum that makes my skin crawl. Whatever animated these defenses last night was substantial magic. We need to be prepared for anything. I look at Merrin on the other side of the door, her eyes wide with apprehension as she checks her own weaponry. Varrika and Seraphine are positioned behind us, a solid wall of muscle and arcane power. I nod at Jeane, my lips pursed in concentration. "We should proceed with caution," I say, my voice measured but firm. "Let's not forget why we're here—to retrieve the Time-Splitting Sword, not to become its next victims."

I reach into my pack and pull out a small vial of holy water, holding it ready at my side. The air around us feels thick with anticipation, and I can almost taste the decay on my tongue. But we've come too far to turn back now. I take a deep breath and step forward, ready to face whatever lies beyond that ominous door.

Merrin

Merrin · Rogue

I edge closer to the tower door, eyes darting, fingers twitching near my crossbow. My heart's pounding like a drum in my ears. I mutter, "Well, this is cheerful. Always wanted to be skewered by reanimated bones on my next adventure." I inch closer to Jeane, keeping my voice low and tight with tension. "Oi, magic lady. Any chance your fancy spells can hold these walking toothpicks at bay? I'd rather not be a shish-kebab today, if it's all the same to you."

I try to keep my tone light, but I know we're in for a world of hurt if those things come pouring out. My eyes flick to the heavy mace at my belt. At least I'm well-armed for close combat. I just hope we can avoid it altogether.

Seraphine

Seraphine · Wizard

I grip my heavy mace tighter, the leather-wrapped hilt cool against my sweat-slicked palm. The air here feels heavy, thick with some ancient, malevolent intent. "The runes on that gate... they're pulsing with fresh power," I murmur to Varrika, who stands tense at my side, her own weapon held ready. My eyes dart between the dark opening ahead and the shadowy forest that surrounds us, a potential refuge if this goes wrong. "Whatever magic animated these defenses last night was substantial. We should be prepared for the worst."
My mind races, trying to recall everything I've ever learned about undead horrors and dark sorcerers. The Time-Splitting Sword we seek could grant immense power, but the cost... I shake my head slightly, forcing myself back into the moment. There's no use worrying about what might happen if we fail to retrieve it. "Jeane," I call out in a low voice, getting her attention where she stands near the front of our small group, "perhaps you should ready that crossbow. If there are skeletons guarding this place, they won't be alone."

Varrika

Varrika · Fighter

I heft my heavy mace, feeling its familiar weight in my calloused hands. The air here feels thick with old magic and newer menace. I scan our surroundings, looking for any sign of movement in the shadows. "Alright, listen up," I grunt, speaking low but forceful. "We're not walking into this blind. Halie, Merrin—you two keep those crossbows ready. Jeane, Seraphine, stay sharp with your spells. We move as one, cover each other's backs. And if anything comes through that door... Well, we'll see how reanimated it stays." I crack my knuckles, a grim smile on my face. I step forward to the towering gate, muscles tensed, ready to meet whatever horrors may lie beyond. This is what we've trained for, what we've traveled through hell to face. Let them come. The Time-Splitting Sword won't claim us so easily.
