The ancient stone tower looms overhead, its surface crumbling away like the flesh of a mummy long entombed. The air around them feels wrong—charged with an ancient malevolence that makes the very breath taste of dust and decay. The Whispering Woods press close, their unseen inhabitants watching with predatory interest as the adventurers stand before the sealed entrance.
Jeane circles the perimeter once more, her crimson eyes scanning every inch of the weathered stones. "I've circled enough," she mutters, more to herself than anyone else. "The stones feel wrong—cold in a way that burns with ancient power." The succubus sorcerer's wings shift restlessly behind her, dark leather catching what little light filters through the trees. She moves closer to Halie and Seraphine, her voluptuous form tense with barely contained anxiety.
Seraphine stands near the gate, her sharp elven eyes narrowed in concentration as she studies the writhing runes. The wizard's elegant robes are marked by travel and sleepless study, her dark hair pulled back severely from a face that bears the proud bearing of one who has faced down greater horrors than most. Yet even she cannot hide the unease that flickers across her features as the ward's magic pulses with increasing intensity.
Varrika moves to position herself between Halie and the gate, her scarred dwarf form a wall of muscle and iron. The fighter's heavy mace rests ready in her grip, a comforting weight against the growing dread that fills the air. She scans the area around them, alert for any sign of movement beyond the ancient barrier.
Halie kneels near the base of the gate, her blue-grey eyes fixed on the writhing symbols covering its surface. The weary cleric's hands tremble slightly as she sketches in her journal, each stroke of the pencil a careful attempt to capture the madness of the ancient magic before them. Her divine aura flickers uncertainly, unable to penetrate the dark energies that seep from the stone.
The ward's magic pulses again, stronger this time, sending a visible ripple through the air around them. Something shifts within the tower—footsteps echoing from deep within its depths. The adventurers exchange tense glances, each silently acknowledging the growing certainty that whatever lies beyond this gate is now aware of their presence.
Jeane steps forward, her voice low but carrying authority. "Merrin, keep your tools back until we understand what triggers this thing." Her crimson eyes flick to Halie and Seraphine. "Halie, map every rune you can see from a safe distance—every symbol matters." She turns to Varrika. "I need to know if there's a service entrance around back."
Seraphine nods grimly, already moving to stand beside Halie. "Document the ward's sentience for study," she instructs softly. "Find alternative entrance to bypass active trap." Her fingers trace arcane patterns in the air as she begins casting a detection spell, magical energy swirling around her in visible currents.
Varrika grunts in acknowledgment and moves toward the tower's eastern side, her heavy footsteps muffled by the thick layer of dust and decaying leaves that covers the ground. She circles the structure carefully, eyes scanning every crack and crevice for any sign of a secondary entrance.
The ward pulses again, weaker this time but accompanied by a low groan from deep within the stone. The runes on the gate seem to writhe with renewed energy, their movements becoming more frantic and disturbing. A cold wind sweeps through the clearing, carrying with it the stench of decay and something older—something that curdles the blood and chills the soul.
Jeane watches the proceedings with growing unease, her hand never far from the arcane focus at her belt. The sorceress knows better than most the dangers of meddling with ancient magic, especially when it's this... alive. She moves closer to Seraphine and Halie, her wings half-spread in a subconscious gesture of readiness.
Seraphine completes her spell with a sharp gesture, the magical energy dissipating in a faint shimmer that leaves her looking even more drawn than before. "There's something else in there," she reports grimly. "Not just the ward—something sentient, powerful, and very, very angry." Her eyes meet Jeane's. "And it knows we're here now."
Varrika returns from her circuit of the tower, her scarred face set in a grim expression. "No service entrance," she reports. "The stones are solid all the way around—this gate is the only way in." She glances nervously at the writhing runes. "But I heard movement inside. Something's stirring."
Halie looks up from her journal, her blue-grey eyes wide with barely contained fear. "The runes—they're not just decorative," she says, her voice shaking slightly. "They're... alive. Sentient. And they're hungry." She clutches her holy symbol tightly, the silver metal seeming to dim in her trembling grasp.
Jeane's expression hardens as she takes in the reports. "Then we need to understand this ward before we try to enter," she states flatly. "Merrin, keep those iron tools away from the gate until I figure out what triggers this thing." She moves closer to the writhing stone surface, her crimson eyes narrowed in concentration as she begins a careful examination of the runes.
The air around them grows colder still, the ancient malevolence seeping into their very bones. The ward pulses again, weaker but more desperate this time, its magic fraying at the edges like an old wound reopening. From deep within the tower comes another groan, louder now—a sound like stone grinding against stone mixed with something that might have been a voice long ago.
Seraphine moves to stand beside Jeane, her sharp eyes scanning the writhing symbols. "What do you see?" she asks softly, already beginning to sketch in her own journal.
Jeane leans closer, her wings folding tightly against her back as she concentrates on the ancient magic before them. "The pattern—it's not just protective," she murmurs, more to herself than anyone else. "It's... feeding somehow. Drawing power from something inside." She traces one particularly complex rune with a fingertip, careful not to touch the stone directly. "And this symbol here—it's a key. An unlocking mechanism."
Varrika moves to position herself between Halie and the gate once more, her heavy mace at the ready. "If we're going to do this," she growls, "let's do it quick. I don't like standing out in the open with whatever's in there getting closer by the minute."
