Shadow of the Ancients / Run 017 / Main Story
Round 100 Transcript
Episode 1 · Episode Round 1

The air is heavy with an ancient malevolent presence as The Ward's magic weakens, its runes writhing in protest. Merrin, still recovering from her brief contact with the gate, takes a step back, her eyes fixed on the writhing symbols. Halie documents the runes with a shaking hand, her brow furrowed in concentration. Varrika verifies the service entrance around back, her battle-hardened instincts on high alert as she searches for any hidden traps or mechanisms. The sound of scraping stone echoes from the other side of the entrance as she carefully makes her way through. Merrin's eyes dart towards Jeane, her voice barely above a whisper. "We need to get moving. The ward's magic is getting weaker, but I don't think that means we're safe yet." She pauses, her gaze lingering on the writhing gate runes before she turns back to the entrance. "Lead the way, Varrika. We'll explore the tower from within."
The sound of scraping stone grows louder as Varrika steps through the entrance, her heavy mace at the ready.
I can feel it—the ward's magic is weakening but it's still active and dangerous. Those footsteps inside aren't random; something in there knows we're here now. Merrin, keep those iron tools away from the gate until I figure out what triggers this thing. Halie, map every rune you can see from a safe distance—every symbol matters. Varrika, I need to know if there's a service entrance around back before we start poking at magic that bites. We're not opening this door until we understand it fully. That ward's hunger is ancient and twisted—it feeds on something trapped inside these walls. And whatever's making those footsteps is clearly aware of us now. We go in prepared or not at all.
The air crackles around us, heavy with an ancient malevolence that clings like a second skin.
I take a step back from the writhing gate, my eyes fixed on the twisting runes that seem to writhe and squirm under their own accord. Each movement sends a fresh jolt of fear through me, a primal dread of something vast and hungry lurking just beyond.
The ward's magic is getting weaker, that much is clear now. The runes are fading, their light dimming as if the very power that created them was being drained away. But with that waning strength comes a new kind of danger. Whatever is trapped within the tower, whatever feeds this ward, it is no longer sleeping. It knows we are here.
My mind races, trying to process the implications. If the magic is failing, what does that mean for the barrier? Are we safe even approaching it now? And those footsteps... they sound closer, more deliberate than before. Something inside the tower is aware of our presence, and it's not happy about it.
I turn to Merrin, who still stands by the gate, her hand hovering near the iron tools. "Merrin," I call out, my voice low and urgent. "Back away from the gate. Now."
She looks up at me, her eyes wide with a mixture of fear and excitement. She nods, taking a step back, but her gaze remains fixed on the runes. I can see the fascination battling the terror in her expression, and it concerns me deeply.
I signal to Varrika and Halie, motioning for them to continue their work. The dwarf's search for hidden traps seems even more vital now, a potential lifeline if things go wrong. Halie, ever the scholar, is already jotting down notes on the runes, her hand trembling slightly. Good, let her focus on that. It will keep her mind occupied.
But my thoughts keep returning to those footsteps. They're getting louder, more insistent. Whatever creature or curse this tower holds, it's no longer content to merely watch us. It wants something from us. And I have a terrible feeling we may not be able to refuse its demands.
I take another step back, my hand instinctively moving to the heavy mace at my belt. The weight of it is comforting, a tangible reminder that despite the magic surrounding us, we still have steel and will at our disposal. We have to find another way in, a path that doesn't lead us directly into whatever nightmare this tower contains.
I keep my heavy mace at the ready, eyes scanning the crumbling stone tower's entrance for any sign of movement beyond the ancient rune-covered gate. The air feels thick with an arcane energy that sets my teeth on edge. Whatever lies within this accursed place, it knows we're here now. Jeane's right—we need to understand the ward's magic before trying to enter. Those runes are alive in some way, and they're hungry for something. I don't like the idea of feeding whatever's trapped inside. But if there's another way... "Alright, I'll check the back for a service entrance," I call over my shoulder to the others. "Keep an eye on those runes. And Merrin—keep your tools away from the gate until we figure out what triggers this thing."
I move along the tower's outer wall, searching the shadows for any sign of a hidden door or entryway. The stones feel cold beneath my fingers, the mortar lines crumbling to dust at my touch. It's like the whole place is rotting from within. In the distance, I hear the echo of footsteps growing louder. Something is approaching the gate, and it's not random. Whatever's inside this tower, it's fully aware of our presence now. And it's coming for us. I tighten my grip on the heavy mace and pray to the Goddess of Light that we've not stumbled into a trap from which there will be no escape. But I'll fight to the last breath to keep Halie safe, even if it means sacrificing myself to whatever ancient evil lurks within these walls. The footsteps grow closer still, and I know our time for planning is running out. We need to find a way in or a way to turn back before it's too late. The ward's magic might be weakening, but the hunger of whatever lies beyond the gate is only growing stronger by the second.
