The air crackled with an unnatural energy, each pulse of the ward seeming to draw the very breath from their lungs. Varrika felt it first—a wrongness that settled into her bones like ice. The runes covering the ancient stone gate didn't just glow; they seemed to writhe with a predatory intelligence.

"Something's not right here," she growled, her hand tightening around the haft of her heavy mace. "This thing... it feels hungry." Her gaze swept across the group—her companions who'd followed her into this cursed wood despite the dangers. They were tired, yes, but their eyes shone with a mix of apprehension and determination.

Jeane, the tall succubus sorcerer, had already begun to back away from the threshold, her crimson wings half-spread as if ready for flight. "I agree," she said, her voice tight. "This ward is... sentient in some way. And it's feeding on our proximity." She glanced at Merrin, who'd frozen mid-reach for her lockpicks. "Merrin—sheathe those tools immediately unless you intend to test the ward's patience further."

Halie, the human cleric with her small silver cross clutched in one hand, had retreated several steps already. Her blue-grey eyes were wide with concern as she studied the pulsing runes. "This magic... it's ancient and wrong," she murmured. "We need to find another way inside—explore around the tower's perimeter, look for alternative entrances before we trigger something we can't handle here."

The very stones seemed to groan with each beat of the ward's power, and from within the crumbling tower beyond came a sound—a slow, deliberate footstep. Something was moving inside, approaching the sealed entrance. The group exchanged glances, the unspoken question hanging heavy: do they push forward now, or fall back and regroup?
