The air crackled with a hungry energy that seemed to feed on their very presence. The ancient runes covering the gate pulsed with an intelligence far older than the empire itself—predatory and patient. Varrika felt it first—a wrongness settling into his bones like ice. The magic here was alive, but not in the way that should make him feel safe.

Jeane's wings fluttered nervously as she studied the barrier. "This is beyond a simple alarm," she said softly. "It's a... a feeding ground." Her crimson eyes traced the writhing symbols. "Magic gets dumped here over centuries, and this thing... it absorbs it."

Seraphine nodded gravely. "The spellwork predates the first human empire by millennia—perhaps more. But it's been maintained somehow." She raised her hands in complex patterns, already beginning an analysis. "I can sense the residue—layers upon layers of lost arcane force."

Varrika shifted his stance, heavy mace ready. "So we're standing outside a magical black hole?" he growled. "Charming."

The footsteps grew louder beyond the gate—something massive moving through stone corridors that had swallowed countless adventurers before them. The runes responded with faster pulses, feeding hungrily on their fear.

Jeane spread her wings partially, preparing for whatever came next. "Varrika, Merrin—stay back twenty feet minimum. Halie, document everything you can from here." She glanced at Seraphine. "Can you buy us time?"

The elven wizard nodded, hands moving in intricate patterns as she began a complex incantation. "I can attempt to overload the ward's sensory array," she said, voice tight with concentration. "But everyone must remain completely still and silent—any sudden movement could "

The scratching started then—a slow deliberate pattern on the iron, like claws testing the barrier's texture. The runes flared brighter in response, drinking in the sound.

Jeane's eyes narrowed. "It's "

A deep voice spoke from beyond the gate—slow and resonant, each word seeming to vibrate through the stone itself. "Welcome, brave ones," it said, amusement coloring its tone. "How long I've waited for visitors. Such "

Merrin opened her mouth as if to protest, but Jeane held up a hand to stop her. " "

Halie clutched her holy symbol tighter, stepping closer to Varrika instinctively. "

Seraphine gasped as she completed her spell, stumbling slightly. "I... I think I understand "

Jeane's voice was tight as she responded. " "

The footsteps stopped just beyond the gate. Silence fell over the area—the kind that seemed to absorb all sound rather than merely contain it.

Then a voice spoke again—closer this time, as if the entity was right on the other side of the iron barrier. "Your little elf has discovered "

Jeane reacted instantly, her wings spreading wide as she began to cast a powerful spell. "Everyone scatter!" she shouted, her voice barely audible over the creature's unearthly roar.

Varrika didn't hesitate. He threw himself forward, heavy mace raised, even as Merrin and Halie darted away in opposite directions. The gate exploded inward with a sound like thunder, iron shrapnel flying in all directions. A massive shadowy form emerged from the cloud of dust and debris—taller than two men, its body composed of writhing magical energy that pulsed with hunger.

Jeane's spell hit first—a blast of arcane energy that slammed into the creature's chest with enough force to stagger a lesser foe. But this thing barely flinched. It turned towards her, eyes like twin suns as it prepared to retaliate.

Varrika roared and brought his mace down on one of the energy tendrils as it snaked towards Jeane's exposed flank. The magical construct screamed—a sound like tearing metal—and dissipated under the blow, but more tendrils immediately sprang up to replace it.

Seraphine was already moving, her hands weaving complex patterns as she began another spell. "I can try to dispel "

Jeane danced back, wings beating furiously as she prepared another spell. "Do it quickly!" she shouted back. " "

The entity lunged forward, tendrils of dark magic reaching for both women. Varrika brought his mace up again, catching one tendril mid-slash and deflecting it aside—but the force of the impact nearly knocked him off his feet. This thing was powerful—far more than any undead they'd faced before.

Jeane loosed another spell—a barrage of fire bolts that slammed into the creature's chest and arms. The magical construct screamed again, tendrils writhing as the arcane energy tried to consume it. But instead of dissipating, the flames seemed to... feed it somehow. The creature grew larger, its form more solid as it absorbed the magical assault.

"Oh no," Seraphine whispered, her face pale even in the flickering light of her own spell. "It's not undead—it's a... "

Jeane cursed fluently in Abyssal as she barely avoided a tendril that would have enveloped her completely. "Wonderful!" she snarled. "Any bright ideas? "

The elven wizard was already moving, hands weaving patterns as she sped up her incantation. "I might be able to banish "

Varrika didn't need to be told twice. He charged forward with a roar, mace raised high as he aimed for the creature's core. The thing saw him coming and turned, tendrils reaching out to intercept—

A bolt of pure arcane energy slammed into its back just as Varrika's mace connected with its front—a perfect pincer attack. The creature shrieked—a sound like reality tearing—and began to waver.

Jeane followed up with another spell, this one designed to disrupt magical constructs rather than damage them directly. A wave of pure force hammered into the entity's already weakened form, and it stumbled backward, tendrils dissipating as its structure began to unravel.

Seraphine shouted the final words of her banishment spell just as the creature tried to reform. A vortex of swirling energy enveloped it—blue and white arcane power clashing with the dark magical tendrils—and for a moment, it seemed like they might destroy each other in a spectacular explosion.

Then, with a sound like a wind tunnel collapsing, the vortex vanished. The entity was gone—banished to whatever realm had spawned it.

Silence fell over the chamber once more, broken only by their own heavy breathing and the distant drip of water somewhere nearby. Jeane lowered her hands slowly, wings drooping with exhaustion. Varrika stood where he was, mace still raised as he scanned for any sign of renewed threat.

Seraphine was the first to speak, her voice barely more than a whisper. "That... that was "

Jeane let out a shaky laugh. "Agreed. Though I'm not sure "

Varrika lowered his mace finally, though he kept a firm grip on its haft. "

Halie stepped closer to him instinctively, her voice barely more than a whisper. " "

Seraphine shook her head slowly. " "

The crackling intensified for a moment, as if the ward had reacted to Seraphine's words—or perhaps to Merrin's continued presence near the gate. A low rumble echoed from deep within the tower's stone walls, and something heavy shifted beyond their line of sight. Footsteps approached—slowly, deliberately.

Varrika's grip on his mace tightened further. " "

Jeane met Varrika's gaze across the group. " "

Merrin spoke up from where she was examining the destroyed gate mechanism. " "

Seraphine moved to stand beside him, watching as he worked. " "
