Phase: converging

The ancient gate shuddered shut with a violent slam that echoed through the stone corridor like thunderclap. The runes upon its surface flailed wildly, each glyph seeming to watch the party with hungry eyes. Jeane moved closer, her dark eyes narrowing as she studied the awakening symbols with focused intensity—an expression that conveyed both academic interest and predatory assessment. Merrin leaned forward slightly, quick hands already moving toward pockets of hidden tools, but froze mid-gesture as the warding magic surged outward in a visible wave that distorted the air around them like heat haze from an open furnace. Halie took an instinctive step back, her hand going to the silver cross at her throat as she clutched her holy symbol tighter. "Stand back," she breathed, more warning than suggestion. "Sentient wards are notoriously... unpredictable in their hunger." The corridor beyond the gate remained ominously dark and silent—whatever had been following them earlier seemed content to observe this developing drama from a safe distance. Jeane circled the barrier slowly, her wings trailing behind her like shadows as she sought weaknesses or patterns in the ancient magic. "Merrin," she called over her shoulder, voice tight with barely contained excitement mixed with genuine concern, "put those lockpicks away. I think touching this thing might be even more dangerous than we realized."
