The tension in The base of a crumbling stone tower, its entrance sealed by an ancient rune-covered gate, deep within the haunted Whispering Woods tightens for a beat as the interruption refuses to go away. Everyone is forced to stay quiet and choose their next move carefully.

Varrika

Varrika · Fighter

The runes' pulsing intensifies, their hunger palpable in the air. The footsteps beyond the gate grow louder, more urgent. I grip my mace tighter, ready to defend Halie from whatever horror may emerge. "Halie, stay back," I warn, positioning myself between her and the corridor. "Merrin, keep those hands off the runes until we understand what they are."

I turn to Seraphine, her caution a beacon in this treacherous place. "Seraphine, any insights on these damned runes? And Jeane, can you make sense of whatever foul magic is at work here?"

My eyes dart to the gate, to Halie, to the shadows beyond. Exhaustion weighs heavy, but fear lends me strength. We've come too far to turn back now. But something feels... wrong. The air crackles with an ancient, sentient energy. The runes seem to whisper, to beckon. And that entity within... it's growing bolder by the moment. We need a plan. A way through this gate without feeding whatever hunger lurks beyond. But first, we must understand our foe. Knowledge is our shield in this place of dread. I glance at my companions, their faces etched with apprehension and determination. "Speak up, all of you. What do we know? What do we dare?"

My gaze returns to the gate, to those pulsing runes and the unknown they guard. We stand on the precipice of a trials most dire. But I will not falter. Not while Halie needs me. Not when the Time-Splitting Sword waits beyond. The battle begins now. In minds and hearts as much as in bodies. And the dwarf stands ready to lead the charge.

Jeane

Jeane · Sorcerer

I've been studying these runes since we got here, and I'm certain now—the ward isn't just ancient magic, it's alive in some way. Hungry even. Whatever power fuels this thing, it feeds on attention. On… proximity. >Merrin, put away your lockpicks for now—the ward's magic might be specifically triggered by metal on its surface. We need more time to read these markings properly before we risk provoking another magical backlash. And Halie, yes, I understand the urgency, but rushing in blindly will only feed whatever's waiting inside. >Those footsteps have stopped. It knows we're here now—we've alerted it. The question is whether we attempt to enter through this main gate before it prepares something more sinister, or if we try to find another way in and risk losing our primary objective entirely.

Merrin

Merrin · Rogue

I step back from the gate, my hand throbbing where the ward's magic seared my flesh. The runes seem to pulse faster at my words, like a hungry beast scenting prey. I look to Varrika and Halie, hoping for some bright idea on how to proceed without ending up as skewered halfling shish kebab. "Alright, we've established that touching the runes is a bad idea," I say, trying to keep my voice steady despite the fear gnawing at my gut. "Any other brilliant suggestions? Because I'm fresh out of lockpicks and patience."
