The gate shuddered shut with a violent slam that echoed through the stone corridor like thunderclap. The runes upon its surface flailed wildly, each glyph seeming to watch the party with hungry eyes. Jeane moved closer, her dark eyes narrowing as she studied the awakening symbols with focused intensity—an expression that conveyed both academic interest and predatory assessment. Merrin leaned forward slightly, quick hands already moving toward pockets of hidden tools, but froze mid-gesture as the warding magic surged outward in a visible wave that distorted the air around them like heat haze from an open furnace.

Halie took an instinctive step back, her hand going to the silver cross at her throat as she clutched her holy symbol tighter. "Stand back," she breathed, more warning than suggestion. "Sentient wards are notoriously... unpredictable in their hunger." The corridor beyond the gate remained ominously dark and silent—whatever had been following them earlier seemed content to observe this developing drama from a safe distance.

Jeane circled the barrier slowly, her wings trailing behind her like dry leaves caught in a storm wind. "Fascinating," she purred, less a statement than a verbalized thought process. Her crimson eyes gleamed with unholy light as they traced the shifting runes. "Not merely ancient magic—this ward is... sentient." She raised one gloved hand toward a particularly aggressive-looking glyph that seemed to pulse with malevolent intent.

Merrin's hand tightened on her dagger hilt, but she didn't move from her protective crouch near the wall. Her quick dark eyes darted between Jeane and the gate—watching the sorceress with barely concealed exasperation mixed with grudging respect for her colleague's reckless curiosity. "Fascinating," she muttered, voice dripping with sarcasm. "I'm thrilled we're breaking bread with a magical entity that probably feeds on adventurer souls."

Jeane ignored the barb, focusing instead on the glyphs as they began to arrange themselves into what looked like a crude map of the tower's interior. A single corridor branched off from their current position, leading deeper into darkness. The ward’s voice spoke again, this time from the runes themselves: "Three trials you shall face—each more challenging than the last." The magic around them pulsed with anticipation.

Halie stepped forward cautiously, her holy symbol raised like a shield. "Wait," she said sharply, addressing Merrin as much as Jeane. "We don't know what kind of traps or... or horrors might be waiting down there!" The corridor beyond the gate remained ominously dark and silent—whatever had been following them earlier seemed content to observe their predicament from a safe distance.

Jeane turned to face Merrin fully, her crimson eyes gleaming in the dim light. "The ward said three trials," she purred, voice low and seductive despite the dire circumstances. "Each more... challenging than the last." She gestged to the branching corridor on the glyph-map. "This first test will likely be simple—perhaps a locked door or a puzzle chamber. Something to assess your competence before the real challenges begin."

Merrin’s hand tightened on her dagger hilt, but she nodded slowly. "Fine," she sighed, resignation mingled with grudging acceptance. "But if I find a room full of spike traps and angry ghosts, I’m holding this against you for all eternity." She moved toward the corridor entrance, pausing to glance back at Halie and Jeane. "And what happens if I succeed? Do I get to come back here and watch you two struggle with... whatever’s left?"

Jeane’s smile widened fractionally—an expression that was all teeth and no comfort. "Of course," she purred, her tone carrying just enough mockery to make Merrin’s jaw clench. The glyph pulsed once more, rearranging itself into what looked like a crude map of the tower’s interior. A single corridor branched off from their current position, leading deeper into darkness.
