Shadow of the Ancients / Run 017 / Main Story
Round 74 Transcript
Episode 1 · Episode Round 1

As Merrin's hand lingers on the gate, a shrill, piercing shriek pierces the air, causing the party to wince in unison. The runes on the gate flail wildly, and the ancient barrier shudders, as if it's trying to expel them. With a sudden, violent jolt, the gate slams shut, its mechanisms grinding into place with an eerie, metallic screech. The ward's magic surges, casting an intense, blinding light that sears the party's retinas. The shriek, now a cacophony of wails and moans, reverberates through the air as the unknown entity within the tower takes its first steps towards them. The party is plunged into darkness, their ears ringing from the sonic assault. In the sudden silence, they can hear the creaking of ancient wooden beams, the scraping of skeletal feet on stone, and the distant, mournful sound of a long-dead bell tolling. The Ward's magic still crackles with energy, threatening to overwhelm them if they don't act quickly. With the gate sealed, their only option is to find another way in – or risk being trapped forever in the Whispering Woods. The party must decide: do they try to find a new entrance, or attempt to bypass the Ward's magic and face whatever horrors lie within the tower?
I step back from the gate's perimeter, maintaining distance from what feels increasingly like a hungry entity masquerading as ancient magic. We're playing with fire here, and these runes smell like they've been fed something... wrong. Jeane, Seraphine—back away. I don't care how fascinating you find this blasphemous architecture; that thing isn't going to explain its 'proper passage' requirements without wanting something in return. Merrin, stop touching everything! You're not a cat with curiosity as currency. Varrika, yes, we need to get inside, but not if it means becoming the ward's next meal or whatever the hell is stomping around on the other side. We need to document these runes properly before—
Footsteps echo closer. Fuck. The more I study this thing, the less I like our options. If those bones are coming with company, we're not equipped for a siege here. I'll bless Merrin's lockpicks and guide her hands, but everyone else? Back up and be ready to run. We test one path, seal it behind us if it's a trap, and pray we find the real entrance before whatever's making that racket decides our presence is an invitation. I draw my mace, grip tight. This is why I'm here—to keep us from falling into obvious pits and praying at the wrong altars. Now back off and let me actually do my job instead of arguing about arcane theories we can't confirm without becoming part of whatever ritual this thing wants to perform.
Jeane steps back from the gate, her dark eyes tracing the pulsing runes with cold precision as she processes what this means for their entry strategy. 'The ward is not merely ancient magic—it's a creature in its own right,' she states, her voice carrying that low purr of controlled confidence. 'And it's hungry.'
She raises one gloved hand to stop Merrin from approaching the gate again. 'Your iron tools are likely what triggered this response last time. We need to understand the ward's mechanics before attempting another entry—it could be feeding on our attention, or more specifically on arcane energy.' Her gaze sweeps across the tower wall where they're trapped outside. 'The footsteps inside have stopped. Whatever is in there knows we're here now.'
Jeane turns to face Halie and Merrin directly. 'Merrin, put away your lockpicks for now—the ward's magic might be specifically triggered by metal on its surface. As for the "proper passage" it mentioned... I suspect that means there's a specific sequence of touches or symbols to deactivate it safely.' She gestures to the runic patterns with her staff. 'We need more time to read these markings properly before we risk provoking another magical backlash.'
Her wings shift slightly, betraying some tension despite her carefully maintained composure. 'Whatever entity is inside has gone silent after hearing us outside—they're either preparing an ambush or trying to understand our situation as well.' Jeane's lips curve in a small, dangerous smile. 'We have two options: attempt to find another entrance around the tower that might be less defended, which could take days of searching through haunted woods; or we face whatever lies within and try to outsmart it from a position of partial control.'
She meets Varrika's gaze directly. 'My instincts tell me the ward is the greater immediate threat—that thing inside may have been trapped in here as long as we have, and might even be an enemy of whatever created this place.' Her voice drops lower. 'But I won't force anyone to follow a plan they're not comfortable with. Speak your minds—quickly—as our window for safe deliberation is closing.'
The runes on the gate flare brighter, responding to her assessment as if the ward itself can hear and understands them discussing its nature. The air grows colder around the ancient stone.
Merrin's hand throbs where the ward's magic seared her flesh. She sucks on her teeth, tasting blood. "Alright, alright, I get it. No more poking the angry door." The runes seem to pulse faster at her words, like a hungry beast scenting prey. She steps back, eyeing the gate with a blend of fear and fascination. "So what's our next move then? We can't just stand here all day while whatever's inside gets its dinner ready." Her gaze darts to Varrika, then to Halie. "Any bright ideas from you lot?"
Merrin's hands twitch towards her lockpicks again before she catches herself. She forces a grin instead. "No more poking the angry door, right. Got it." Her eyes dart around, looking for any other weaknesses in the tower's defenses. The heavy mace at her hip feels reassuringly solid, but Merrin knows brute force alone won't be enough to crack this nut. She needs to use her wits, and fast, before they all end up as skewered halfling shish kebab.
