Round 70 Transcript
Episode 1 · Episode Round 1

The tension in The base of a crumbling stone tower, its entrance sealed by an ancient rune-covered gate, deep within the haunted Whispering Woods tightens for a beat as the interruption refuses to go away. Everyone is forced to stay quiet and choose their next move carefully.
I creep closer to the gate, my keen eyes scanning for any signs of traps or pressure plates. The air feels charged with magic, raising the hairs on the back of my neck. I mutter under my breath, "Right then, let's see what we're dealing with here."
I reach out a tentative finger to trace the ancient runes etched into the stone, bracing for some magical backlash. But as my fingertip makes contact, the gate lets out an ominous hum that seems to resonate in my very bones. "Oi, I think this thing is alive," I hiss, quickly withdrawing my hand. "And not particularly friendly, either."
I glance over at Jeane, the sorcerer, who's studying the runes with a furrowed brow. "Any ideas what we're up against here?" I ask, trying to keep the tremor out of my voice. My eyes dart around, taking in the rest of the party. Halie, the cleric, has her hand on the hilt of her sword, ready to draw at a moment's notice. Varrika, the fighter, is positioned at the rear, her muscles coiled and ready to spring into action if needed. I feel a flicker of unease as I contemplate our next move. The tower looms before us, its secrets and dangers unknown. But with each passing moment, I'm more convinced that this is no ordinary quest. Whatever lies beyond this gate, it's going to test us in ways we can't yet imagine. I take a deep breath, steeling myself for whatever challenges lay ahead. "Right then," I mutter, "time to see what this accursed tower has in store for us."
I touch one of the runes – carefully, fingertips barely grazing the stone. The ward responds immediately, a low hum vibrating through the gate and into my bones. "Something's alive in here," I say softly to Merrin, holding her gaze. "The magic responds when I touch it."
I need you where I can see your hands. Too many stories about rogues tripping wards with their 'skillful' fingers. Varrika, watch our rear – that sound from inside the tower concerns me more than this gate's temper. The runes shift under my fingertips, like a tongue trying to form words I don't yet understand. But I will. Understanding is power. Something wants us in there. Or something wants to keep us out. Either way, we need to know its terms before Merrin triggers the wrong sigil with that iron pick of hers and turns us all into arcane confetti.
I watch Merrin's fingers brush against the ancient runes on the gate, my own heart giving an answering thump as the ward responds with a low, ominous hum. The magic here is unlike anything I've ever encountered in my studies, a tangible presence that seems to writhe just beneath the surface of the stone. It’s not just a passive defense, not merely a spell woven into the fabric of this crumbling tower. No, it’s something far more unsettling: it’s sentient.
My gaze flicks from Merrin to Jeane, who is leaning closer now, her own expression one of intense concentration as she tries to decipher the shifting patterns on the gate. The air crackles with an energy that raises the fine hairs on my arms, and I can feel a prickling sensation at the back of my neck, warning me that something powerful is watching us.
"Merrin," I call out, my voice a sharp whisper in the silence. "Be careful. The magic... it's unlike anything I've encountered before. It’s not just a passive defense. It’s sentient. Reacting."
I take a step back, putting more distance between myself and the gate, feeling the need to give this strange entity some space. My mind races, trying to recall every fragment of lore I've ever read about sentient magic, about wards that have minds of their own. But none of it seems quite right. This feels different, more dangerous somehow.
I look to Halie, who is standing at the edge of our small group, her hand resting on the hilt of her sword as she studies the runes with a furrowed brow. "What do you think?" I ask, my voice barely audible over the low thrumming of the ward’s magic. "Is it a price for passage, or just hungry for company?"
My question hangs in the air between us, a fragile thread of hope that perhaps we can reason with whatever ancient power lies behind this gate. But deep down, a cold certainty is taking root in my gut. This isn't just a puzzle to solve; it's a beast to pacify, and I have no idea if we have the right bait.
