The tension in The base of a crumbling stone tower, its entrance sealed by an ancient rune-covered gate, deep within the haunted Whispering Woods tightens for a beat as the interruption refuses to go away. Everyone is forced to stay quiet and choose their next move carefully.

Seraphine

Seraphine · Wizard

I step back from the gate, my eyes fixed on the pulsing runes that seem to writhe in response to Merrin's touch. The air here feels heavy, charged with an ancient power that makes my skin prickle with both fear and excitement. My mind races, trying to decipher the complex patterns etched into the stone, but they are like nothing I've ever seen in my studies.
"The magic... it's unlike anything I've encountered before,"
I murmur, more to myself than to anyone else. I pull out a small notebook and begin scribbling furiously, attempting to record every detail before the ward changes again. "It’s not just a passive defense. It’s sentient. Reacting."
My heart beats faster as I watch Jeane approach the gate, her hands raised in a gesture of non-violence that feels both brave and foolish given what we're facing. "Be careful," I call out, my voice strained with concern. The idea of touching something so clearly aware and hostile turns my stomach.
I look over at Halie, who is methodically documenting the runes with a similar fervor to my own. There's a grim determination in her eyes that mirrors my own. We both know how much danger we’re in, but also how valuable this knowledge could be. If we survive this, the secrets of this place will be ours to unravel.
Merrin's discovery of the alcove catches my attention, and I feel a thrill of anticipation mixed with dread. An alternative entrance? It could be our way inside, past the ward's defenses. Or it could be a trap waiting to be sprung by something far worse than a few undead guards. "Merrin," I say, trying to keep my voice level despite the mounting tension, "be cautious in there. We need you whole if we're going to get out of this alive."
My hand instinctively moves to the hilt of my wand, a comforting weight at my hip. Whatever comes next, I'll be ready to cast. The question now is whether we should push forward into this unknown, or retreat and regroup. My scholar's heart screams at me to stay, to learn more, but my survival instinct whispers that we're already in over our heads.*

Jeane

Jeane · Sorcerer

I trace the runes with my eyes alone—Merrin's iron tool work is too risky now—and focus on the magical signatures. The ward responds to touch; its sentience is undeniable and hostile. These aren't passive defenses, they're... alive. In a way. Responding. Learning. The footsteps inside grow louder, more insistent. We have perhaps minutes before whatever approaches reaches this gate. Merrin, I don't care if you think there's an easy path inside—I need you here where I can see your fingers and what they touch. Varrika, cover our rear flank with that mace of yours. Halie, document the rune shifts but keep behind us. Seraphine, prepare a counter-spell just in case this ward tries to swallow ours whole. We have three options now: brute force through the gate which will likely trigger every trap and alert whatever's inside, Merrin searching that alcove for a secret entrance which could be a deathtrap itself, or I attempt to communicate with the ward directly to find its terms. The last option is riskiest but might get us in without starting a fight we can't win. I choose communication. This thing wants something—information, tribute, blood perhaps—but it's not just mindless slaughter programming. If we can understand what it needs, maybe we can trade for passage instead of breaking its teeth with hammers and spells. The footsteps are thirty seconds out now. Time to prove whether I'm a diplomat or just another sacrifice to this cursed place.

Halie

Halie · Cleric

I’ll document these runes from here and prepare blessings against sentient undead in case Merrin triggers something. But no one touches those gates until we understand what this ward WANTS, whether it’s a price for passage or just hungry for company.
