The stones beneath their boots vibrated with each heavy thud that resonated through the ancient structure beyond the gate. The runes covering the massive barrier were no longer static symbols—they writhed with an unsettling animation, each one seeming to stare at the party with cold, calculating eyes. A heavy thud resonated from within the structure, growing louder by the second.
Seraphine took a measured step back from the gate, her sharp elven eyes scanning every inch of the writhing runes. “The air feels thick with ancient power,” she murmured, more to herself than anyone else. “Heavy and oppressive.” She turned to face Halie, her expression grave. “Your divination spell is our only hope now. We cannot risk alerting whatever lies beyond this threshold.” Her fingers traced the edge of her spellbook, a nervous habit.
Varrika shifted her stance, her grip tightening on the heavy mace. “Whatever’s making that sound is getting closer,” she growled. “We need to move fast if we’re going in.”
Jeane stepped forward, her crimson eyes narrowing as she studied the shifting symbols. “Wait,” she said sharply, her voice cutting through the tension. “The runes—they’re not just moving randomly. They’re tracking something.” She pointed at Merrin, who had been carefully examining the lock mechanisms with her tools. “Merrin, stop. Put your tools away immediately.”
Merrin froze mid-motion, her hands hovering near the gate’s surface. “What? Why?” she asked, confusion evident in her voice.
“Because those runes just focused on you when you brought iron near them,” Jeane explained, her tone urgent but controlled. “They’re not decorative—they’re a security system, and they’re actively scanning for threats. Using iron tools is probably the worst thing you could do.”
Seraphine nodded slowly, her expression thoughtful. “Jeane has a point,” she said. “The magical signature of those runes grew significantly more... aware when Merrin introduced metal into the equation. We should proceed with extreme caution.”
The heavy thud from within the tower grew louder still, echoing through the stone like a drumbeat counting down to doom.
