The air inside the Whispering Woods felt wrong—wrong in a way that had nothing to do with the usual creeping dread of haunted forests. No, this was something else entirely. Something ancient and powerful and... thinking. The stones beneath their boots vibrated with each heavy thud that resonated through the ancient structure beyond the gate. The runes covering the massive barrier were no longer static symbols—they writhed with an unsettling animation, each one seeming to stare at the party with cold, calculating eyes. A heavy thud resonated from within the structure, growing louder by the second.

Seraphine took a measured step back from the gate, her sharp elven eyes scanning every inch of the writhing runes. “The air feels thick with ancient power,” she murmured, more to herself than anyone else. “Heavy and oppressive.” She turned to face Halie, her expression grave. “Your divination spell is our only hope now. We cannot risk alerting whatever lies beyond this threshold.” Her fingers traced the edge of her spellbook, a nervous habit.

Varrika shifted her stance, the heavy mace resting comfortably in her grip. “The footsteps draw near,” she rumbled, her gaze fixed on the corridor beyond the gate. “Something ancient and foul is approaching.” She moved without hesitation, positioning herself between Halie and the potential threat. “Halie, stay back. If whatever’s coming gets past me...” Her words trailed off, but the implication hung heavy in the air. The runes pulsed with each thunderous step, their hunger growing more apparent.

Jeane’s crimson eyes narrowed as she studied the shifting symbols. “Merrin,” she said, her voice a low warning. “Stop fiddling with the iron.” She gestured sharply to where Merrin had been working on the lock. “Those symbols shifted when your tool came close, and I don’t think that was coincidence.” Her wings unfurled slightly, a subconscious gesture of unease. “Whatever magic powers this gate is ancient and sentient. Halie’s divination spell might give us the answers we need without provoking it further.”

The runes’ eyes seemed to follow each party member in turn, their hunger growing with every passing moment. The footsteps grew louder still, echoing through the ancient stone corridors like a promise of violence yet to come.
