The tension in The base of a crumbling stone tower, its entrance sealed by an ancient rune-covered gate, deep within the haunted Whispering Woods tightens for a beat as the interruption refuses to go away. Everyone is forced to stay quiet and choose their next move carefully.

Seraphine

Seraphine · Wizard

I stand back from the gate, my eyes narrowing as I watch the runes shift and writhe under Merrin's touch. The air feels thick with ancient power, heavy and oppressive. Every instinct is screaming at me to retreat, to leave this place of dark secrets and dangerous magic.
"The ward is alive,"
I say, my voice so low it is almost lost in the air, but everyone hears it. I turn to Halie, my expression grave. "Your divination spell is our only hope now. We cannot risk alerting whatever lies beyond those runes."
My gaze drifts to Jeane, who seems entranced by the sigils she maps, then back to Merrin, who clutches her lockpicks like a lifeline. A flicker of concern crosses my face. Their recklessness could cost us everything.*
"We need to be sure we understand every aspect of this before attempting entry. The wrong move could trigger something none of us want to face."

Varrika

Varrika · Fighter

The footsteps draw near, and I feel the hairs on my neck stand up. Something ancient and foul is approaching the gate. The runes writhe and pulse, hungry for blood. I step forward, placing myself between Halie and the corridor. "Halie, stay back. If whatever's coming gets past me..." I trail off, letting the implication hang in the air. My hand grips the handle of my heavy mace, worn smooth by countless battles. It feels good in my grip, a familiar weight that grounds me even as the magic of the tower makes my skin crawl. "Jeane, Seraphine," I call out, keeping my voice low and steady, "I need you two to be ready with those spells. Merrin, keep working on the lock, but be careful. Those runes are watching us."

I take another step forward, my boots scuffing against the ancient stones. The air is thick with the stench of decay and something else... something hungry. "Whatever comes through that gate, I'll hold it off as long as I can. But we need to be ready to move fast once Merrin gets us through."

I glance back at Halie, her face pale but determined in the flickering torchlight. "You ready for this, priestess?"

The footsteps grow louder, and I feel a shiver of fear run down my spine. But beneath that fear is a grim determination. This is what I was made for. To stand between the innocent and the horrors of this world. I square my shoulders and tighten my grip on my mace. The waiting is over. Whatever comes next, we'll face it together.

Jeane

Jeane · Sorcerer

I don't like this. The gate's runes are alive—I can feel them watching us—and Merrin nearly set something off with her lockpicks. We need to understand what we're dealing with before forcing entry. Merrin, stop fiddling with the iron. Those symbols shifted when your tool came close, and I don't think that was coincidence. Whatever magic powers this gate is ancient and sentient. Halie's divination spell might give us the answers we need without provoking it further. Seraphine's right—we can't risk alerting whatever lies beyond those runes with careless prodding. The footsteps are getting closer, which means something inside knows we're here now regardless of what we do next, but that doesn't mean we should rush blindly into a trap because Halie got impatient. We've come too far to end ourselves on some trigger-happy magical door just because Merrin wants to feel useful or Halie thinks we should bulldoze our way through every obstacle. Varrika might be right about positioning for defense, but that's assuming the worst-case scenario rather than trying to avoid it entirely by being smart first. I'll keep mapping these runes until I understand their sequence and purpose. If they respond differently to silver or non-metallic tools compared to Merrin's iron pick, we might find a way through without setting off alarms. The ward is clearly magical in nature—if it counter-mirrors arcane spells back at us, Seraphine and I could end up hurting ourselves more than helping. We're all tired from travel, yes, but that doesn't mean we should let exhaustion make us sloppy or reckless. Let's document everything before deciding if forcing entry now is worth the risk of whatever ancient horror is approaching or what might wake in the tower proper because we triggered its front door defense system prematurely. Trust my judgment on this—I've spent decades studying arcane sigils and ward mechanics, while Halie's got maybe three months of theology school under her belt. Rushing ahead with incomplete information just because she thinks patience is weakness isn't leadership—it's arrogance masquerading as courage. If the runes respond differently to each party member's approach, we'll know there are specific triggers and can work around them methodically rather than stumbling into whatever safeguard was designed to keep people like us out in the first place.
