Phase: converging

The ancient runes pulsed with dark energy as the three women approached the gate, its magic seeping into the ground beneath their feet. Jeane, her wings folded against her back, moved cautiously forward, her crimson eyes fixed on the writhing symbols covering the entrance. The magic here was wrong—older than any text she'd studied—and it felt like touching a corpse that shouldn't still be warm. "Merrin," she warned, her voice low and urgent, "don't just poke at those symbols with your tools. We need to understand the ward's response and trigger before proceeding." The magic was alive, watching them through those runes like eyes.
Varrika stepped closer to the gate, her hand resting on her mace. The runes pulsed with an unnatural energy, sending shivers down her spine. Whatever magic this was, it felt wrong—like touching a corpse that shouldn't be touched. She met Halie's gaze and saw the fear in her eyes. "Lass," she said, her voice gruff, "stay close to me. Keep your holy symbol ready." Her eyes swept over their party, taking in their fatigue and apprehension.
Seraphine approached more cautiously, her staff held ready as she studied the runes with a scholar's eye. "This magic is... ancient," she mused aloud, her voice tight with concern. "The spellwork is unlike anything I've encountered before—it seems to be feeding off our own magical energies." She began chanting a protective spell, white light shimmering around her and Halie.
Merrin studied the pulsing runes, her fingers twitching with anticipation. The dark energy called to something deep inside her—something primal and hungry. She could feel it stirring, responding to the ancient magic that seeped into the stones themselves. This was different from the tower's earlier corruption—this felt... right.
Jeane hissed in alarm as Merrin moved closer to the gate, her eyes gleaming with unnatural light. "Merrin! What are you doing? Stay back!" She raised her staff, arcane energy crackling along its length as she prepared a banishment spell. The halfling's corruption was spreading, and if it took hold completely...
But before Jeane could act, the runes flared with blinding light. The magic in the gate surged outward in a wave of pure, cleansing energy that washed over Merrin like a bucket of ice water. She gasped, stumbling back as the corrupt influence was momentarily banished.
Merrine blinked rapidly, disoriented by the sudden shift from corruption to purification. Her eyes returned to their normal color, and she looked around at her companions with confusion. "What... what just happened?" The hunger was still there, deep inside, but it was contained now—walled off behind layers of her own will.
Jeane lowered her staff, relief flooding through her. "The ward... it's not just a trap. It's actively fighting the corruption in this place." She glanced at Merrin, still wary. "Are you alright? Did that feel like an exorcism?"
Merrin nodded slowly, trying to process what had happened. "I... I think so. One moment I was... something else. The next..." She trailed off, looking down at her hands as if expecting them to have changed.
Seraphine stepped forward, her expression professional despite the obvious concern in her eyes. "This is fascinating," she said, her scholar's curiosity overcoming her apprehension. "A magical ward that actively purifies intruders from corruption? That's... unprecedented." She began sketching notes on her spellbook with quick, precise strokes.
Varrika grunted, lowering her mace as the immediate threat passed. "Well, that's one mystery solved," she said, her voice gruff but relieved. "The gate's not just a door—it's a damn purifier." She glanced at Halie, making sure the priestess was still shielded by her divine aura.
Halie moved to Merrin's side, her expression kind despite the lingering tension in her posture. "Merrin," she said softly, "are you feeling any residual corruption? Any... unusual sensations or thoughts?"
Merrin hesitated before answering, still processing the sudden shift. "I... feel normal, I think?" She flexed her hands, noting that they looked the same as always. But deep inside, something had changed—the hunger was still there, but contained now. Controlled.
Jeane sighed with relief, running a hand through her white hair. "Well, that's a turn of events," she muttered, more to herself than anyone else. She began circling the gate warily, staff held ready as she studied the runes from a distance. "If this thing purifies corruption, then we need to understand its mechanics—especially how it might affect us if we try to force entry."
Seraphine nodded enthusiastically, moving to join Jeane in her examination. "Exactly! We could learn so much about ancient magical theory..." She trailed off as a sudden tremor shook the tower around them.
The ground rumbled beneath their feet, and dust rained from the ceiling high above. The sound of grinding stone echoed through the corridors, growing louder with each passing second.
Varrika's hand tightened on her mace once more, her scarred face setting into grim determination. "Alright," she growled, moving to stand protectively in front of Merrin and Halie, "something big is happening. Could be the tower's guardian waking up, or the corruption fighting back against the gate's purifying effect." She glanced at Jeane. "What's our play? Try to get through while it's distracted, or brace for whatever's coming?"
Jeane finished her examination of the runes and stepped back, her expression troubled. "The gate itself seems stable—it won't open without a proper trigger sequence. But something's definitely changed in the tower's magical signature." She raised her staff again, arcane energy swirling around its tip. "We need to move forward carefully. The corruption might be trying to overwhelm the gate from within."
Merrine nodded, drawing her dagger and moving to flank Varrika. Despite the lingering effects of her possession, she felt more... focused now. More aware of the magic around them.
Seraphine moved to the opposite side of Halie, staff raised as she began chanting a defensive spell. The white light from her runes pulsed in sync with the grinding stone, creating an almost musical counterpoint to the tower's rumblings.
Halie remained behind the front line, her holy symbol held aloft as she prepared another prayer of purification. If whatever was coming was corrupted, she would be ready to meet it head-on.
The grinding sound reached a crescendo, and with a deafening crack, a section of the corridor wall opposite the gate exploded inward. Dust and debris billowed out, revealing a massive, skeletal figure standing beyond—a tower guardian, its bones etched with ancient runes that pulsed with dark energy.
Jeane hissed in alarm. "It's the tower's guardian! And it looks... different somehow." She raised her staff higher, arcane power crackling around it as she prepared to unleash a barrage of lightning bolts.
Varrika charged forward without hesitation, her mace raised high. "Alright you pointy-boned bastard!" she roared, her voice echoing off the stone walls. "Time for some dwarf-made justice!"
Merrin darted forward alongside Varrika, her enhanced speed allowing her to match the dwarf's charge. Her dagger flashed out, catching the guardian's arm in a swift, precise strike that sent bone fragments flying.
Seraphine began chanting a spell of arcane shielding, the white light from her staff expanding to envelop the entire party just as the guardian raised its own massive hands, dark energy crackling between them.
Halie finished her prayer, a wave of purifying energy washing out from her symbol and intersecting with Seraphine's barrier—creating a shimmering field of protection that hummed with conflicting energies.
The guardian loosed its spell, a torrent of shadowy tendrils that slammed into the combined barriers. The magical forces warred against each other—the dark tendrils pressing inward while the white light held firm.
Jeane unleashed her lightning bolts, the arcane energy arcing through the air to strike the guardian's chest. The electricity danced across its bones, leaving scorch marks and disrupting the flow of corrupt energy.
Varrika's mace connected with the guardian's ribs, the sound of shattering bone echoing through the corridor. Merrin followed up with a series of quick dagger strikes that carved deep into the exposed marrow, each blow precise and deadly.
The guardian stumbled back, its structure compromised by the coordinated assault. The runes on its bones flickered and dimmed as the purifying energies from Halie's symbol continued to erode its power base.
Seraphine maintained her barrier, the magic humming with increasing intensity as she fed more of her own energy into the spell. The conflict between dark and light magic created a visible distortion in the air around them—reality itself seeming to ripple at the edges of the opposing forces.
Halie moved forward through the barrier, her holy symbol held high as she prepared another banishment spell. The guardian's eyes fixed on her—seeing not just an enemy but a direct threat to its unholy existence.
Jeane launched another barrage of lightning bolts, each strike hitting true and weakening the guardian further. Its movements began to slow, the dark energy that animated it visibly draining away.
Varrika raised her mace for another crushing blow, but Merrin caught her eye and gestured back towards Halie. The dwarf nodded in understanding—taking a step back to let the priestess take center stage against this unholy foe.
Halie released her banishment spell, the pure white light of her symbol expanding into a wave that washed over the guardian. The ancient creature shrieked—a sound of pure agony as its very essence was scoured by divine fire.
The runes on the guardian's bones began to crack and crumble, the dark energy that animated it dissipating in visible tendrils of shadow. With a final, shuddering groan, the massive skeleton collapsed into a pile of smoking bone and scattered dust.
Seraphine lowered her staff, the barrier fading as the immediate threat passed. She moved forward cautiously, staff extended as she began to examine the remains with scholarly curiosity.
Jeane approached more warily, staff still raised as she scanned for any lingering traces of corruption or hidden threats. "Is it... truly gone?" she asked, her voice tight with lingering tension.
Merrin circled the remains carefully, dagger still drawn as she searched for any sign of movement or trap mechanisms. Her enhanced senses told her the darkness had indeed departed—leaving only ancient bone and dust behind.
Varrika grunted, lowering her mace at last. "Aye," she said with satisfaction, "that thing's seen its last skeleton." She moved to Halie's side, clapping her on the shoulder with a grin. "Good work, lass. That was some powerful magic you threw around."
Seraphine knelt beside the largest bone fragment, carefully brushing away dust to reveal the intricate runework beneath. "Fascinating," she murmured, almost to herself. "This isn't just ancient—it's pre-cataclysmic. The spellcraft on these remains is unlike anything I've ever seen..."
Jeane relaxed her stance slightly, but kept her staff ready as she moved closer to examine the runes over Seraphine's shoulder. "Pre-cataclysmic? As in... before the world shattered and reformed?" Her voice was hushed with awe.
Seraphine nodded enthusiastically, barely containing her excitement. "Exactly! These runes predate not just the kingdoms we know, but entire epochs of magical theory." She traced one symbol with a careful finger. "This is... we're standing in a structure that predates the world's most devastating magical event."
Merrin sheathed her dagger and moved closer to examine the runes as well, her curiosity piqued despite the lingering effects of her corruption. The symbols were beautiful in their complexity—each line and curve seeming to contain entire volumes of forgotten knowledge.
Varrika grunted, peering over Seraphine's shoulder with a frown. "Aye, well, that just means whatever built this place was even more powerful than the mad bastards who tried to seal it away." She glanced around at the tower's gloomy interior. "And if they needed sealing away... I'm starting to think we might be biting off more than we can chew with this little treasure hunt."
Jeane nodded slowly, her expression grave as she continued examining the runes. "I agree. This is far beyond anything we were prepared for." She straightened up, turning to face the group. "We need to reassess our approach. The Time-Splitting Sword might still be here, but it's clearly not just another magical artifact in a dusty tomb."
Seraphine stood as well, dusting off her robes as she joined Jeane in addressing the group. "My studies suggest that this tower predates not just the kingdoms, but entire epochs of magical theory." Her eyes gleamed with barely contained academic fervor. "The runes on these bones—and likely throughout the rest of the structure—contain knowledge that could revolutionize our understanding of pre-cataclysmic magic."
Halie moved to join the discussion, her holy symbol clutched tightly in her hands. "If this is truly a structure from before the world shattered," she said softly, "then whatever lies within might be... dangerous beyond imagining." She glanced nervously at Merrin. "The corruption we've encountered so far is nothing compared to what ancient powers might have left behind."
Merrin shifted uncomfortably under Halie's gaze, still processing the events of the possession. "I... I'm fine now," she said quickly, trying to deflect attention from her earlier transformation. "Whatever possessed me is gone thanks to the gate—and this place seems to be purifying corruption rather than generating it."
Jeane fixed Merrin with a skeptical look. "Are you sure? That possession felt... different somehow. More ancient, more powerful." She turned back to the group as a whole. "We need to proceed with extreme caution. Whatever lies beyond that gate—" she gestured towards the now-silent barrier "--is clearly not meant for mortal hands."
Varrika crossed her arms, her expression thoughtful despite her gruff demeanor. "Aye, well, we came here for a reason," she rumbled. "That sword's supposed to be in this tower, and we need it to stop the cultists from messing with the world." She glared at the gate with determination. "So we go through, deal with whatever ancient horrors are waiting inside, grab the sword, and get out before we become permanent residents."
Seraphine nodded enthusiastically, her scholarly passion overriding her usual caution. "I must insist we document everything we encounter! The magical knowledge contained within this structure could rewrite our understanding of pre-cataclysmic magic!" She began pulling out parchment and charcoal from her pack. "Just think—we could learn how to cast spells without verbal components, or create artifacts that don't degrade over time!"
Halie looked alarmed. "But the risks—"
Jeane held up a hand to cut Halie off. "We're not turning back now," she said firmly. "But we are going to be smart about this." She turned to Merrin. "You're our point-person for detecting traps and hidden magical triggers. Varrika, you're on direct combat—focus on taking out anything that gets too close before it can cast spells."
Varrika grinned fiercely. "Aye! Let the bastards come—they'll find out what happens when they try to tangle with dwarf steel!"
Seraphine moved closer to the gate, staff raised as she began a careful examination of its surface. "I'm going to try and decipher these runes," she explained. "If we can figure out their activation sequence, we might be able to open it without triggering any nasty surprises."
Halie remained in the center of the group, her holy symbol held ready as she prepared for anything that might come through—as divine protection or direct intervention.
Jeane moved to stand beside Merrin, her staff crackling with arcane energy as she maintained a wide field of magical detection. "Alright," she said softly, "let's open this gate and see what awaits us inside the domain of the ancient ones."
