The ward pulsed with malevolent curiosity as the three women approached the gate, its ancient magic seeping into the very ground beneath their feet. Jeane, her wings folded against her back, approached cautiously, her crimson eyes fixed on the writhing runes that covered the entrance. The magic here was old—older than any text she'd studied—and it felt wrong, like touching a corpse that shouldn't still be warm.

"Merrin," she warned, her voice low and urgent, "don't just poke at those symbols with your tools. We need to understand the ward's response and trigger before we proceed." The magic was alive, watching them through those runes like eyes. Jeane glanced back at Varrika, who stood nearby, her heavy mace ready, her scarred face set in a grim expression.

Seraphine moved forward, her sharp elven eyes studying the complex patterns etched into the stone. Each mark seemed to pulse with a life of its own, reacting to their mere presence. A shiver ran down her spine, not just from the cold, but from the sheer malevolent intelligence radiating from the ward itself.

"I can feel it," she murmured, more to herself than anyone else. "This magic... it's sentient. We're dealing with something far beyond simple arcane defenses here."

Varrika shifted closer to the gate, her eyes narrowing as she watched the dark pulse quicken. She could feel it in her bones—whatever was inside that tower, it didn't like them. Could smell their fear, hear their racing hearts.

"Halie," she called out, her voice a low growl, "stay sharp, lass. Keep your holy symbol ready and your shield high." She turned to the other women. "You lot be careful with those runes now. Don't go poking at what we don't understand. The air's thick with magic I don't trust, and the footsteps inside grow louder."

The ward's thrumming intensified, filling the air with a low, menacing hum. The trees nearby seemed to writhe in response, their branches reaching out as if drawn by some unseen force. The ground trembled beneath their feet, and the party knew—they were being judged.
