Shadow of the Ancients / Run 017 / Main Story
Round 31 Transcript
Episode 1 · Episode Round 1

The ancient runes on the gate shudder, their glow intensifying as the ward's energy surges once more. The trees nearby twist and writhe, their branches like grasping fingers, as if attempting to ensnare the party. The ground trembles beneath their feet, and the air is heavy with malevolent intent. A low, menacing chuckle echoes through the Whispering Woods, growing louder with each passing moment. The runes' glow blazes brighter, casting flickering shadows across the ground, as if trying to blind and disorient the party. The ward's energy crackles with an otherworldly power, and the air seems to vibrate with anticipation. Whatever is inside the tower knows they're here, and it doesn't like them one bit.
I study the pulsing runes, my heart racing. Whatever's inside this tower... it knows we're here now. I can almost feel its hunger. The air's thick with magic I don't trust one bit. Halie's right - we need a plan before we try forcing that gate. I inch closer to the gate, senses on high alert. The runes' glow is blinding now, casting eerie shadows across the crumbling stone. I catch Varrika's eye and nod towards my lockpicks. Maybe there's a way in without tripping every trap at once... But first, we need to know what we're up against. Seraphine, can you sense anything beyond this barrier? Any wards within the ward, so to speak? Because right now, whatever's in there - it doesn't want us walking through that door.
I approach the rune-etched gate, feeling its wrongness seep into my skin like decay. These symbols aren't just carvings—they're eyes, watching us, studying our magic like a predator sizing up prey. Whatever's inside that tower... it's not natural. Merrin, don't just poke at those symbols with your tools. We need to understand the ward's response and trigger before we proceed. Varrika's right—whatever's in there doesn't want us here. The magic feels wrong, ancient and hungry, like touching a corpse that shouldn't still hold warmth. Seraphine, can you sense anything beyond this barrier? Any wards within the ward, so to speak? And Merrin, I know your rogue instincts are screaming at you to force entry, but we need to verify what'll trigger those defenses first. We're all exhausted from travel—one misstep and whatever's in there gets us before we even raise our weapons. The trees around us twist, branches like grasping fingers. The ground trembles beneath our feet. Whatever's inside that tower has indeed sensed our presence... and it is not natural.
I stand before the ancient rune-covered gate, my eyes fixed on the complex patterns etched into its surface. The air hums with a dark energy, a palpable presence that seems to be watching us, assessing our intentions. It feels like we've been caught in the gaze of some great and terrible beast.
"The magic here is... alive," I whisper, my voice so low it's almost lost to the air. I extend a hand, fingers trembling slightly as they hover just inches from one of the pulsing runes. "It's aware of us. Every spell we cast, every tool we touch against it—it knows."
My gaze shifts to Varrika and Halie, a flicker of worry passing through my eyes. The dwarf's solid presence is reassuring, but Halie looks pale, her holy symbol clutched tight in her fist as if it were a lifeline. "Halie," I call out softly, "can you feel that? What does your faith tell you about what we're facing?"
I step closer to the gate, my hand resting on my mace. The runes pulse with an unnatural energy, sending shivers down my spine. Whatever magic this is, it feels wrong - like touching a corpse that shouldn't be touched. I meet Halie's gaze and see the fear in her eyes. "Lass, stay close to me. Keep your holy symbol ready."
My eyes sweep over our party, taking in their fatigue and apprehension. Jeane and Seraphine are studying the runes intently, trying to unravel their secrets. Merrin is poised to act, her tools at the ready. But there's an unease among us all, a sense that we're being watched by something ancient and malevolent. I turn back to the gate, my jaw set. "Alright, listen up. Whatever's inside this tower - it knows we're here now. And I don't think it's going to let us in without a fight." I glance at Halie, then at Jeane and Seraphine. "You lot be careful with those runes. We need to understand what we're dealing with before we try to force our way through."
My hand tightens on my mace as I feel the wrongness emanating from the gate. But there's a glimmer of hope too - the knowledge that we have strength in numbers, and that together, we might just be able to overcome whatever lies beyond this barrier. I take a deep breath, steeling myself for what's to come. "Let it come," I mutter under my breath. "Let it try to stop us from taking back what's ours. Because one way or another - we're going through that gate."
