As Jeane draws closer to the gate, the air thickens with anticipation. The runes' glow intensifies, casting flickering shadows across the ground. The ward's energy surges, and the trees nearby twist and writhe in response. The ground trembles beneath their feet as the ward assesses their magic. Suddenly, a low, thrumming hum fills the air, and the runes' pulse slows to a deliberate, almost rhythmic cadence. The ward seems to be studying the party, weighing their intentions. The party knows they must act soon – either test the ward's triggers further or prepare for whatever comes through the gate. Varrika positions herself between Halie and the tower's entrance, her hand on the hilt of her mace. "If we're going in, I'll be the first to stop whatever's inside," she growls, her voice low and deadly. The ward's energy surges again, this time with a hint of malevolent intent. The runes' glow blazes brighter, casting an otherworldly light on the party.

Jeane

Jeane · Sorcerer

I approach the gate carefully, wings folding against my back as I focus on the runes. The magic here is old—older than any text I've studied—and it feels wrong, like touching a corpse that shouldn't still be warm. Whatever's inside that tower... it knows we're here now. Merrin, don't just poke at those symbols with your tools. We need to understand the ward's response and trigger before we proceed. The magic is alive, watching us through those runes like eyes. Jeane glances back at Varrika and Halie. Stay sharp. Whatever's making that sound inside—it's not natural. Seraphine, can you sense anything beyond this barrier? Any wards within the ward, so to speak? I need to know if our magic will even work past it before we waste time trying to force entry.

Seraphine

Seraphine · Wizard

The air crackles with an ancient power as I approach the gate, my eyes narrowing to study the complex runes etched into its surface. Each mark seems to pulse with a life of its own, reacting to our mere presence. A shiver runs down my spine, not just from the cold, but from the sheer malevolent intelligence radiating from the ward itself.
I turn to face Seraphine, seeing the same grim determination on her face that I feel in my own chest. We are here for a purpose, one that goes beyond mere treasure hunting or quest completion. This is a test of our skill, our courage, and our ability to unravel the mysteries of the past.
Jeane's voice cuts through the heavy silence. "Seraphine," she calls out, her tone sharp with urgency, "can you sense anything beyond this barrier? Any wards within the ward, so to speak?"
My gaze drops back to the glowing runes, feeling their weight bearing down on me like a physical force. I take a slow step closer, reaching out a trembling hand. The air around my fingers grows colder still, and I can almost feel the ancient magic recoil at my touch.
The scent of decay hits me then, a sickly sweet odor that seems to emanate from within the very stone of the tower itself. It's not just the smell of old dust and cobwebs; it’s something deeper, more sinister. A chill settles deep in my bones as I realize what it reminds me of—death.
I look up at Jeane, my expression grim. "There is something... alive in there," I whisper, the words almost lost in the air. "And it knows we're here."*

Varrika

Varrika · Fighter

I shift closer to the gate, my eyes narrowing at the flickering runes. That dark pulse quickens, and I feel it in my bones. Whatever's in there, it doesn't like us. Can smell our fear, hear our racing hearts. Halie, Halie! Stay sharp, lass. Keep your holy symbol ready and your shield high. Merrin, Jeane, Seraphine - you lot be careful with those runes now. Don't go poking at what we don't understand. The air's thick with magic I don't trust, and the footsteps inside grow louder. I tighten my grip on my mace, feeling the weight of the tower's history bearing down on us. We're trespassers in a tomb that wants to keep its secrets. But we've come this far. And whatever's in there... it's not natural. So let it come. Let it try to stop us from taking back what's ours. I square my shoulders, ready for whatever horrors the darkness might bring forth. My eyes never leave the gate, watching for any sign of movement. The battle's coming. And I'll be ready to meet it head-on.
