Phase: converging

The air around them crackled with tension as the three women stood before the ancient gate, its runes pulsing with a life of their own. Jeane stepped forward, her wings half-spread in readiness, dark eyes scanning the complex patterns etched into the stone. "This is beyond mere magic," she said softly, her voice carrying both awe and apprehension. "This entire structure... it's alive." Her fingers traced one particularly intricate symbol, the runes responding with a bright pulse that seemed almost eager.
Halie moved closer, her silver cross clutched tightly in one hand as she began to recite a low prayer under her breath. The divine energy around her shimmered and gathered, ready to be unleashed at a moment's notice. "You're certain it's not just... residual magic?" she asked, her voice barely above a whisper. "That this isn't some ancient construct but... "
Jeane shook her head slowly, her wings twitching with barely contained excitement mixed with dread. "No," she said firmly. "This is something else entirely." She turned to face Merrin, who was already moving around the perimeter of the gate, eyes sharp and fingers itching to investigate. "There's a sequence here—multiple triggers that must be activated in the correct order or... "
Merrin paused her circuit, dark eyes gleaming with curiosity even as she struggled to maintain her composure. "Or what?" she prompted, her voice carrying its usual bravado but underscored by genuine concern.
Jeane's expression turned grave as she explained the potential consequences of incorrect activation. Merrin whistled softly, her earlier fear momentarily forgotten in favor of morbid curiosity. "Well," she said slowly, her dark eyes fixed on the pulsing runes around them, "that certainly explains why this place feels so... alive." She glanced back at Jeane and Halie, a hint of her usual mischief returning despite the gravity of their situation. "So we're not just playing with ancient magic—we're essentially trying to defuse a magical bomb inside someone's corpse? That's either the most blasphemous thing I've ever heard or the coolest."
Jeane let out a short, sharp laugh at Merrin's comment, some of the tension easing from her shoulders. "I'm not sure 'cool' is quite the word I'd use," she replied, her voice dry despite the situation. "But yes—essentially." She turned back to face Halie and Merrin once more, her expression growing serious again as she spoke. "We need to approach this carefully," she continued. "I'll work on deciphering the rune sequence—figuring out the correct order and timing for each trigger. But..." Her wings twitched nervously as she hesitated. "... I'm going to need your help."
Halie nodded grimly, her gaze fixed on the complex symbols etched into the stone. "Of course," she said, her voice barely above a whisper. "What do you need us to do?" Her hand tightened around her silver cross once more as divine energy shimmered around the holy symbol in response to her distress.
Jeane's expression turned thoughtful as she considered Halie's question. After a moment, she spoke again, her voice low and measured. "I'll need Merrin to... examine the physical aspects," she said, gesturing to the hidden compartment in the stone wall. "See if there are any mechanical triggers or hidden mechanisms we might need to engage manually." Her crimson eyes fixed on Merrin as she continued. "And Halie..." She turned to face the cleric woman directly, her expression grave. "... I'm going to need your divine magic ready. Just in case."
Merrin raised an eyebrow at Jeane's words, a hint of her usual bravado returning despite the gravity of their situation. "Just in case?" she repeated, her voice carrying both challenge and curiosity. "What exactly are you planning to 'just in case'?"
Jeane's expression remained serious as she met Merrin's gaze. "Contingencies," she said simply.
