Narrator · Narrator

The tension in The base of a crumbling stone tower, its entrance sealed by an ancient rune-covered gate, deep within the haunted Whispering Woods tightens for a beat as the interruption refuses to go away. Everyone is forced to stay quiet and choose their next move carefully.

Jeane

Jeane · Sorcerer

Jeane steps forward, her gaze sweeping across the ancient runes etched into the stone. She can feel the magic pulsing beneath them like a heartbeat—the tower is breathing, and something within is stirring. Her wings shift restlessly at her back as she speaks. "This isn't mere stonework," Jeane says to Halie, her voice controlled but sharp. "These are wards bound with dark magic older than your goddess or mine. Merrin, put down those tools—the iron might trigger whatever defenses this thing has left." She turns to Seraphine, already moving her hands in a subtle arcane gesture that keeps the magic close but contained. "And you—if you're going to test it, make it something simple. We need to understand what we're dealing with before we go poking at it."

Her eyes narrow as she focuses on the rune nearest them—a symbol that seems to pulse with malice. "Whatever's in there, whatever's making those footsteps... it knows we're here now." She glances back at Varrika and Merrin, her expression unyielding despite the weariness gnawing at her bones from days of travel through the cursed woods. "We proceed carefully or not at all. This isn't a tomb—it's a wounded god trying to hold itself together with dark magic and sheer will."

Halie

Halie · Cleric

I can feel it—something ancient and wrong behind those runes. They're not just stone; they're breathing. (gestures toward the gate) Seraphine, I need you to be careful with your magic. Whatever's animating these defenses... it feels like a wounded god trying to hold its guts in place with dark energy alone. (turns to Merrin) And you—put those iron tools away. Right now. You're liable to set off whatever traps are left if you start poking around. (voice firm but not unkind) We need to proceed with caution here.

Merrin

Merrin · Rogue

Merrin sets down her tools, eyes wide as she watches the runes pulse with an otherworldly energy. "This thing feels alive," she mutters, "hungry even. Whatever's in there, it knows we're here now."

She shifts her weight from foot to foot, hand hovering near the hilt of her dagger. The tower entrance looms before them, dark and inviting like a hungry maw. "Show us what you've got," Merrin challenges the gate, voice tight with a blend of apprehension and bravado. Her gaze darts to Seraphine, then Halie. "Our wits and skills are all we've got in here. So let's use 'em." She takes a deep breath, trying to still the fluttering of her heart. "Jeane, Halie - you're up first. Let's see what magic can do before I start fiddling with locks."

Merrin's hands twitch, eager to get to work but knowing better than to rush in. For once, she's content to let the spellcasters take the lead, at least for now. The halfling's eyes never leave the pulsing runes, watching for any sign of movement or change. Whatever lies beyond this gate, Merrin knows it won't be simple. But then again, nothing ever is. She readies herself, muscles tensed and mind sharp, ready to react in an instant. One wrong move and they could all be undone. But that's the way of things for a rogue like her. "Alright then," Merrin says quietly, "let's see what this place has in store for us." With that, she nods to Jeane and Halie, signaling them to proceed. The halfling steps back, giving them room to work their magic while she keeps watch for any signs of trouble. Whatever comes next, Merrin is ready to face it head-on. It's what she does best.
