The air inside the tower's shadow seemed to thicken, growing heavy with anticipation that had nothing to do with the physical exertion of travel. The gate stood as it always had—ancient stone covered in runes that pulsed with a hungry light—but something had changed. The sound of shifting mass deep within the walls was new. And footsteps approaching the far side of the barrier? Definitely new.

Jeane's wings rustled, a subconscious betrayal of her tension as she took a measured step back from the gate itself. Her eyes traced the patterns of the ward with the focused intensity of someone trying to read a language written in blood and starlight. "Merrin," she said sharply, voice cutting through the sudden silence, "put down your tools. Seraphine's right: these patterns are too complex for brute force." She met Halie's gaze across the barrier between them—stone and magic and the gulf of shared apprehension—and nodded once. "We verify the mechanics first. Merrin can disarm traps after we understand what they do."

Halie, her hand already on Merrin's shoulder in a gesture that spoke more of protective instinct than romantic affection, felt the human woman beneath her palm tense at Jeane's words. She knew better than to argue with the sorceress when she was this focused—Jeane had seen things in her centuries of existence that made even the bravest adventurer pale. But that didn't mean Halie had to like it.

"Put down your tools," the cleric repeated, voice firm despite the way her heart hammered against her ribs. "Seraphine, tell me if your spells can even touch it before we start testing its patience." She turned back to the gate, eyes narrowing as she studied the shifting patterns of the runes. Whatever magic held this barrier together... it was old. Dark. Hungry in a way that made her skin crawl.

And then there were the footsteps. Still approaching. Still rhythmic and deliberate. Something large moving through what should have been empty corridors. Jeane's words came back to her: "Whatever made that sound... it wasn't natural." Halie's free hand moved to the silver cross around her neck, fingers tracing its familiar shape as she tried to draw comfort from a symbol that suddenly felt woefully inadequate against whatever waited beyond that gate.

Jeane nodded slowly, her crimson eyes still fixed on the barrier between them and whatever lay within. "Agreed. We need to know what's in there before we start trying to get in." Her gaze flicked to Merrin, then back to Halie. "And no one touches those runes until I've mapped them completely. One wrong move could collapse this whole thing on us—or worse."

The stones groaned again, deeper this time—a sound like something vast and heavy shifting inside the tower walls. The gate's runes pulsed faster now, their hungry light intensifying as if responding to the proximity of living flesh. Jeane stepped back instinctively, her wings rustling with sudden tension. "Did you hear that?" she hissed, eyes fixed on the seams where the massive stone doors met. "Something moved in there." The heavy footsteps were closer now, rhythmic and deliberate—something large approaching the far side of the barrier.

Merrin froze mid-reach for her lockpicks, fingers hovering just above the cold metal. She glanced at Jeane, then at Halie, her expression caught between curiosity and apprehension. "That wasn't the wind," she muttered, voice barely audible. The halfling's hand drifted away from her tools, instead reaching for the small dagger at her belt—a weapon more useful against living threats than mechanical ones.

Halie moved to stand beside Merrin, her hand closing around the human woman's shoulder in a gesture of solidarity. Her blue-grey eyes were wide with barely contained fear, but her voice remained steady when she spoke. "We need to know what's in there before we start trying to get in," she said, addressing both Jeane and Merrin. "Whatever made that sound... it wasn't natural." The cleric's free hand moved to the silver cross around her neck, fingers tracing its familiar shape as if for comfort.

Jeane nodded slowly, her crimson eyes still fixed on the gate. "Agreed. We verify the ward mechanics first—Merrin can disarm traps after we understand what they do." She turned her attention back to Halie and Merrin, her expression serious. "And no one touches those runes until I've mapped them completely. One wrong move could collapse this whole thing on us—or worse."
