Round 16 Transcript
Episode 1 · Episode Round 1

The tension in The base of a crumbling stone tower, its entrance sealed by an ancient rune-covered gate, deep within the haunted Whispering Woods tightens for a beat as the interruption refuses to go away. Everyone is forced to stay quiet and choose their next move carefully.
Jeane traced the geometry of the ward with her eyes, careful not to activate anything prematurely. The runes pulsed like dying hearts—this thing was alive in its own way, clinging to existence through sheer magical force. "Merrin," she said sharply, "put down your tools. Seraphine's right: these patterns are too complex for brute force." She met Halie's nervous gaze and nodded. "We verify the mechanics first. Merrin can disarm traps after we understand what they do."
Jeane turned her attention to the tower entrance. The footsteps within were drawing closer, slow and deliberate. Whatever approached was either large or injured—or both—and likely not friendly. Her wings flexed instinctively, ready for flight if necessary. "We don't know what's in there," she continued, voice low but commanding, "but we do know that ward is armed with spells powerful enough to end us all." She gestured to the pulsing runes. "One wrong move and those skeletons outside become our least concern."
Jeane drew a small dagger and carefully traced one of the outer geometric patterns, eyes narrowing as she watched for reactions. The rune flared briefly—just once—as her blade passed over it. "See that?" she said to Seraphine. "It's reactive but not aggressive yet." Her eyes gleamed with dark amusement despite the tension. "The ward is territorial, not suicidal. It wants us out, not dead... yet."
She turned back to Merrin, who still held her lockpicks. "Listen carefully," Jeane said, stepping closer. "I don't care how good you are at disarming traps—if this thing's magic triggers before your steel does, we all die instantly." Her voice dropped to a dangerous purr. "So unless you want to be responsible for getting us all cursed on your first move, you'll stand down until I give the signal."
Jeane then faced the tower entrance fully, her sorcerous power coiling beneath her skin like shadowed smoke. She could feel the presence within drawing closer—a slow, steady rhythm that spoke of something ancient and patient. "Whatever's in there," she murmured more to herself than the group, "it's been waiting a long time." Her lips curved into a small smile as she drew on her arcane energies, preparing spells for whatever emerged. "Let's hope it values company more than its predecessors did."
The runes on this thing pulse with hunger—a wounded god holding its guts in place with dark magic. Merrin, put down those tools. Seraphine, tell me if your spells can even touch it before we start testing its patience. And Varrika, keep that mace ready—whatever's making those footsteps inside isn't taking a stroll for pleasure. We need to think like this tower wants us to, not how we want to.
