The magic in the runes pulsed wrongly, like a heart beating against its cage. Merrin put down her tools, hands shaking. The footsteps inside the tower grew louder, closer. Something was coming.

Jeane's wings flexed, ready to unleash hell if needed. "We need to break this ward before whatever's inside gets out." Her eyes glowed crimson with barely contained power.

Halie stepped forward, hand on her mace hilt. "Wait. Seraphine, can you test the magic without triggering anything?" The elf scholar nodded, already muttering a detection spell.

Varrika shifted her weight, scarred hands tight around her weapon. "If somethin' comes through that gate, we hit it hard and fast." Her eyes were on Merrin, ready to cover the halfling's flanks.

The runes pulsed again, brighter this time, then dimmed. The footsteps stopped just beyond the barrier. Whatever was inside had noticed them.

Jeane whispered a spell under her breath, magic gathering at her fingertips. "Whatever happens, stick together." Her wings spread slightly, ready to fly if needed.

Halie drew his mace halfway, blue eyes scanning the gate for weaknesses. "Seraphine, report."

The elf scholar finished her spell, dark elegant hair floating as arcane energy danced around her fingers. "The magic... it's ancient and wrong. Like something trying to hold back a flood with sheer will." She stepped back, hands raised in preparation.

Merrin drew her dagger, teeth gritted. "If this goes bad, I'm going for the gate hinges." Her eyes were on the join between stone and wood, calculating angles.

Varrika moved to stand beside Halie, solid presence against the barrier. "Aye. We'll hold the front while you work from the sides."

The runes pulsed again, brighter this time, then dimmed. The footsteps resumed their approach, slower now, deliberate.

Jeane's wings flexed fully open, magic crackling around her fingertips. "Whatever happens, we face it together." Her crimson eyes locked onto the gate, waiting for the moment of truth.

Halie nodded to his companions, mace ready. "For glory and gold." His voice was steady despite the tension coiling in his gut.

Seraphine maintained her spell, arcane energy swirling around her hands. "I'll try to analyze whatever breaks through." Her sharp eyes were fixed on the barrier, mind racing with possibilities.

Merrin shifted her grip on her dagger, muscles coiled for action. "For adventure and treasure." She was already calculating her path to the hinges, eyes never leaving their weak point.

Varrika's hands tightened on her mace, every instinct screaming at her to run. But she stood her ground, dwarf pride warring with ancient fear. "Let's hope this pays better than the last damn fool errand."

The footsteps stopped directly beyond the gate. Silence held for a heartbeat. Then the runes flared blindingly bright, magic exploding outward in a wave that slammed into them all.

Jeane reacted instantly, wings beating hard as she blasted upward and backward out of the immediate area. Her spell unleashed, crimson energy crackling around her in a defensive shield.

Halie was thrown back by the force but managed to roll with it, coming up on one knee with mace raised. The barrier had failed completely—whatever was inside was now outside with them.

Seraphine was knocked flat onto her back, spell dissipating as she gasped for breath. Her eyes wide with shock, she scrambled backward, feet scrabbling against the forest floor.

Merrin hit the ground hard but managed to keep hold of her dagger. She rolled once and came up in a crouch, already moving toward the gate's side structure. The hinges were exposed now—she could potentially disable them.

Varrika was thrown forward, sliding several feet before coming to a stop against a tree trunk. Her mace clattered from her grasp as she tried to catch herself, hands scraping bark. She was up in seconds, scanning for threats and her companions.

The gate itself began to crumble inward as the magical structure holding it together evaporated. Stone ground against stone, dust billowing outward as the ancient barrier collapsed completely.

From within the newly opened doorway emerged a figure—tall, humanoid, clad in rusted armor that still bore traces of ancient symbols. Its face was skeletal, eyes burning with green flame. A skeleton warrior, animated by dark magic to defend this place for eternity.

It raised a massive two-handed sword, the blade chipped and dull but still clearly deadly. "Intruders," the thing rasped in a voice like bone rubbing against stone. "You will not pass."

Jeane hovered above the scene now, wings beating slowly to maintain her position. Her spell was ready, aimed directly at the undead guardian. One wrong move and it would taste hellfire.

Halie charged forward with his mace raised, blue eyes blazing with battle fury. "For the party!" he roared, bringing the weapon down in a devastating overhead strike aimed at the skull.

Seraphine scrambled to her feet, drawing her spell components even as she backed away. "I'll try to banish it!" she shouted, arcane energy already swirling around her fingers.

Merrin reached the gate's side structure and immediately began working on the hinges with her dagger. The metal was old and rusted, but still solid—this would take time.

Varrika retrieved her mace and moved to flank the undead guardian alongside Halie, ready to strike from its blind spot. "We'll keep it busy," she growled to Merrin. "Do your thing!"

The skeleton warrior swung its massive sword in a wide arc, the blade passing harmlessly through empty air where Halie had been standing a moment before. The cleric had ducked and rolled to the side, coming up in a defensive crouch.

Jeane unleashed her spell, a stream of crimson fire streaking downward toward the undead guardian. The magical flames engulfed it completely, and for a moment it seemed victorious—the skeleton warrior's bones began to char and blacken from the intense heat.

But ancient dark magic was not so easily dispelled. The burning figure simply stood there, its green eyes still glowing with malevolent intent even as its physical form was consumed by arcane fire.

"Aaugh!" Halie cried out as the thing's sword swung again, this time catching his shoulder and biting deep into muscle. He was thrown backward by the force of the blow, landing hard on his back with a grunt of pain.

Seraphine finished her banishment spell just as Varrika's mace slammed into the skeleton warrior's ribs from the side. The arcane energies swirled around the undead form, warring against the dark magic that animated it.

The skeleton warrior staggered but remained standing, its attention now split between the approaching dwarf and the magical assault from behind. It raised its sword again, preparing to defend against Varrika.

Merrin worked frantically at the hinges, her halfling dexterity allowing her to manipulate the ancient metal in ways a larger person could not. She had one pin removed already, working on the second.

Jeane's spell faded as the skeleton warrior's physical form regenerated the damage, but she maintained her hovering position above the fray, ready to provide supporting fire if needed.

Halie clutched his wounded shoulder, blue eyes blazing with pain and determination. He struggled to his feet, drawing his backup weapon—a heavy crossbow—from beneath his cloak.

Varrika raised her mace for another strike, this time aiming at the joint where the creature's arm met its body. If she could separate the weapon from the wielder, it would be significantly more vulnerable.

The skeleton warrior swung again, this time catching Varrika a glancing blow across her back as she committed to her attack. The dwarf warrior grunted in pain but pressed through, bringing her mace down hard against the creature's elbow joint.

There was a sickening crack of old bone breaking, and the undead guardian's left arm fell away completely, sword clattering to the ground. It raised its remaining arm toward Varrika in retaliation, fingers clutching at empty air as it tried to grapple her.

Seraphine completed her banishment spell just as the creature's grasping hand closed around empty space—Varrika had already leaped back out of reach. The arcane energies swirled more intensely now, beginning to overpower the dark magic that animated the skeleton.

Merrin finished removing the second hinge pin, and the entire gate structure began to tilt dangerously. She scrambled clear just as the ancient wood and stone gave way completely, the massive barrier crashing down in a cloud of dust and debris.

The skeleton warrior stood amidst the rubble, its single arm still raised as if seeking a target that was no longer present. Its green eyes scanned the area, finding Halie first as he loaded his crossbow with shaking hands.

Jeane dove into action, wings beating hard as she sped toward Halie to provide cover. Her hands blazed with arcane fire once more, ready to incinerate anything that threatened her friend.

Seraphine maintained her banishment spell concentration, the swirling energies around the undead guardian growing brighter and more unstable as they continued to erode its dark animating magic.

Varrika circled wide around the rubble, using the fallen gate as partial cover while she repositioned for another strike. Her back still ached from the glancing blow, but adrenaline carried her forward.

Merrin emerged from beneath a partially collapsed section of the gateway, covered in dust but unharmed. She drew her crossbow and moved to join Halie and Jeane, adding her firepower to the defensive line.

The skeleton warrior advanced through the rubble with jerky, purposeful movements. Its green eyes locked onto Halie—perhaps sensing the cleric's injury—or maybe just targeting the closest living thing. The single-handed grip on its massive sword was awkward but functional.

Halie fired his crossbow, the bolt streaking toward the undead guardian's skull. The projectile struck true, punching through bone and embedding itself deep in the creature's brain stem.

The skeleton warrior stumbled, its movements becoming erratic as the mechanical damage interfered with its nervous system. It still advanced, however, driven by whatever dark magic animated its bones.

Jeane unleashed her arcane fire spell, a stream of crimson energy that engulfed the stumbling undead guardian completely. The magical flames consumed its skeletal frame, charring bone and scattering dust as they sought to purify the ancient evil.

Seraphine maintained her banishment spell, the swirling energies around the creature intensifying in response to Jeane's offensive magic. The dark animating force was clearly struggling now, unable to maintain its grip on reality.

Varrika charged from the side, mace raised high for a devastating blow against what remained of the undead guardian. Her scarred hands gripped the weapon tightly as she committed to the attack, every muscle in her compact frame tensing for impact.

Merrin fired her crossbow at the same time as Varrika charged, her bolt adding to the hail of projectiles already peppering the creature from multiple angles. The halfling scout had always trusted her instincts more than her eyes when it came to combat—especially in situations like this where precision mattered less than volume.

The skeleton warrior, now little more than a collection of burning bones held together by malevolent will, tried to raise its remaining arm in defense against the incoming assault. But the damage was simply too great—the dark magic animating it could not withstand this sustained onslaught.

With a sound like ancient stone collapsing, the creature's structure gave way completely. Bones scattered, dust billowed outward, and the green fire in its eyes flickered once before dying out forever.

Silence fell over the clearing for a moment as the party recovered from the adrenaline rush of combat. The tower's entrance lay open now, its ancient guardian defeated at last. But something about the darkness beyond those crumbling stones made even the bravest among them hesitate—what other horrors awaited within?
