Shadow of the Ancients / Run 017 / Main Story
Round 10 Transcript
Episode 1 · Episode Round 1

The Ward's magic pulses with increased urgency as the slow footsteps draw closer, their deliberate pace sending a shiver through the air. The runes on the ancient gate shatter in a burst of blue light, releasing a cacophony of discordant notes that clash against the wind. The mechanism's creaking grows louder, and the section of gate that gave way earlier now swings open with a faint whisper, revealing a narrow slit of dim light. As the light spills into the night, a dark tendril of magic snakes out from the slit, writhing like a living thing. It reaches out, hesitating at the threshold, before coalescing into a humanoid form cloaked in tattered black robes. The figure's face remains obscured by the shadows, but its presence exudes an aura of malevolent curiosity. The air is heavy with tension as the party awaits the figure's next move. Jeane's hand tightens around her spellbook, while Halie readies her holy symbol. The unknown entity takes another deliberate step forward, its slow pace a stark contrast to the turmoil within the Ward.
I step back from the gate, heart pounding in my ears. The runes' pulsing intensifies, their blue glow almost blinding now. Whatever magic this is, it's not just ancient—it's alive, and it's hungry. "Okay, okay, I get it," I mutter, hands raised in surrender. "No more lockpicking with cold iron." I glance at Jeane, then Seraphine. "But we can't just stand here gawking at it. That... thing... in there knows we're here now. We need to make a decision, and fast."
I chew my lip, mind racing. The tower looms above us, its crumbling stone walls seeming to lean in closer, eager to swallow us whole. The air is thick with the scent of decay and something else—anticipation, perhaps. Like a predator waiting for its prey to make the first move. "Alright," I say, lowering my voice to a whisper. "We've got options. We can try to find another way in—there's gotta be a back door or a window we can boost Halie through. Or..." I trail off, eyeing the gate warily. "Or we can go in now, while it's distracted. Pick our way through the rubble and try to find the sword before whatever's in there realizes we're not just more skeletons to add to its collection."
I look around at the others, trying to gauge their reactions. Halie's got her holy symbol gripped tight, lips moving in silent prayer. Varrika's got her mace at the ready, muscles tensed like a coiled spring. Jeane and Seraphine are deep in discussion, fingers flying as they sketch out sigils and runes. "Thoughts?" I ask, voice barely audible over the pounding of my own heart. "Because I don't know about you, but I'd rather not be here when whatever's making those footsteps decides to come say hello."
Jeane steps forward between Merrin and the gate's pulsing rune pattern. Stop. Whatever this is—it's not just ancient magic. It's alive and aware. Her fingers trace symbols in the air as she studies the shifting light.
Merrin, put those iron tools away right now unless you want to trigger every trap they have. Halie—maintain distance, don't let your aura broadcast our intentions too clearly. She turns to Seraphine. Can you sense any gaps? Any way to read this pattern without completing it? Jeane's gaze shifts to the tower entrance as slow footsteps echo inside. We can try to find another entry point—that takes time we might not have if something's already noticed us. Or... her voice drops, almost seductive in its danger ...we accept the invitation. Walk through that door knowing whatever designed this Ward is expecting company. The blue fire reflecting in her eyes suggests she's not entirely opposed to the risk. We go in together, prepared for anything from skeletons to demons. My magic will hold if we stay close and move fast—assuming they don't have something that feeds on arcane power specifically. She pulls out a scroll of protective runes and begins tracing symbols in the air around them. This won't last long, but it might give us enough edge to reach the central chamber before whatever's inside decides to... greet us properly.
I step forward, holy symbol raised between us and the tower's gaping maw, its dark magic pulsing like a diseased heart. "We're not barging in blind," I declare, voice firm despite the dread pooling in my gut. "That ward’s alive—hungry—and Merrin nearly fed it her curiosity on a platter." I glare at each party member until they meet my eyes. "We assess first. Together. No one goes solo or plays hero without a plan." My hand tightens around the silver icon, drawing strength from its cool weight. "Jeane’s right—something in there knows we’re here now. We need to decide if this is our fight before we commit." I’m not backing down, but neither am I charging forward with eyes closed and prayers half-formed. This needs thought, strategy, and most importantly, unity.
