As Merrin pauses to examine the runes, the cold wind howling from the gateway arch grows louder, its icy breath whipping through the party's hair. The runes on the gate pulse with an ominous energy, their blue glow casting eerie shadows across the weathered stones. The magic feels alive and hungry, sensing the party's hesitation. Suddenly, a faint crack echoes through the air as one of the runes shatters, its dark magic bursting forth in a burst of sparks. A section of the gate's mechanism gives way, sending a jagged piece of stone tumbling to the ground. The sound is followed by the creaking of ancient wooden beams, and the sound of slow, deliberate footsteps echoing from within the tower.

Jeane

Jeane · Sorcerer

I approach the gate, my wings tucked close against the chill wind blowing from within. The runes pulse like living things—blue fire in ancient stone teeth. This is no mere warning; this is a trap with teeth. Merrin, stop. Do not touch those locks with iron until we find another way through or around. Seraphine, can you sense any gaps? Any pattern that might serve as a key rather than setting off every defensive spell they have waiting? I don't want to trigger something that turns us all into living torches before we even get inside.

Seraphine

Seraphine · Wizard

I step back from the gate, my eyes fixed on the runes that cover its surface like a second skin. They pulse with an eerie blue light, each symbol seeming to writhe and twist in the dim firelight. The cold wind howling from the gateway arch sets my nerves on edge, but it's nothing compared to the sensation of being watched by those hungry marks.
Merrin's lockpicks clink against the mechanism, the sound echoing unnaturally loud in the heavy silence that has settled over our group. I shake my head, a gesture of both warning and resignation.
"Stop that, Merrin," I say, my voice so low it's almost lost to the wind. "You're right, Halie - forcing our way through could be signing our own death warrants."
I turn to Jeane, who is already crouched near the base of the gate, her fingers tracing the intricate patterns in the stone.
"What do you see? Is there a weakness we can exploit without setting off every defensive spell these things have?"
My gaze darts back to the gate, the runes seeming to darken as I look at them directly. They feel alive, almost sentient, and the thought chills me more than any winter wind ever could.

Halie

Halie · Cleric

jeane, seraphine, varrika—stop! do not touch those runes until we understand their function! >These aren't just warnings—they're teeth waiting to close on anything foolish enough to force its way through. I've seen this kind of binding before in texts: a ward designed to consume intruders. >Varrika, stand back with your mace ready. Merrin, put those lockpicks away. Jeane and Seraphine—I need you both to analyze the pattern while maintaining distance from direct contact. >We have other tools. The tinderbox for heat disruption, the crowbar for mechanical bypass, my silver holy symbol for consecration attempts if needed. But these runes? They pulse like a heartbeat—something alive and hungry is behind them.
