Phase: escalating

The runes on the ancient gate pulsed with a cold blue light as Merrin worked the complex lock mechanism, each symbol writhing as if alive with dark purpose. The air howled with a faint, mournful wind that sent the party's torches flickering in response. The ward, sensing its defenses were breached, began to hum with dark energy. The gate creaked open, revealing a dimly lit corridor beyond. Shadows writhed across the walls like living things, and the air was heavy with decay and old magic.
"Stop," Halie hissed suddenly, grabbing Merrin's wrist. "Look at these runes—they're not just decorative." The wiry halfling scout paused her work, eyes narrowing as she studied the ominous symbols etched into the stone. Varrika moved forward, positioning herself between the gate and Halie with a tight grip on her heavy mace. "Merrin, I don't like this," she muttered. "Those runes look like teeth waiting to snap shut." She turned to the wizard. "Seraphine, can you sense any gaps in this ward? Any weak points we might exploit without setting off every defensive spell they've got trapped here?" The elf woman shook her head slowly, expression grave. "I'm afraid not," she replied. "The ward is too complex—too tightly woven. We've already triggered something by breaching it." She glanced at the sealed gateway. "Those runes... they're not just decorative. They're teeth waiting to snap shut."
Jeane circled the barrier slowly, her wings shifting restlessly behind her as she examined each rune with predatory curiosity. "The magic feels... wrong," she whispered, barely containing her excitement. "Old and ravenous. Whatever's bound in these walls isn't just waiting—it's hungry." She turned to Seraphine. "Can you sense any gaps in this thing? Any weak points we might exploit without setting off every defensive spell they've got trapped here?" The wizard shook her head slowly, her expression grim. "I'm afraid not," she repeated. "The ward is too complex—too tightly woven. We've already triggered something by breaching it." She glanced at the sealed gateway. "Those runes... they're not just decorative. They're teeth waiting to snap shut."
Varrika's scarred face set into a grim expression as she surveyed the dark corridor stretching ahead. "Right then," she growled, adjusting her grip on the heavy mace. "If we're trapped in here with whatever's making that noise, we'd better find it before it finds us." She turned to Halie. "Stay close—if undead or worse shows up, I want you shielded while we take them on."
Merrin's nimble fingers paused their work on the lock mechanism as she studied the ominous symbols etched into the stone. The cold wind howling from the gateway arch set her teeth on edge, and she could practically feel the hunger emanating from the dark depths beyond.
The runes flared suddenly in a burst of cold blue light, and a howling gale erupted from within the tower. The gate creaked open, revealing a dark corridor that stretched ahead into darkness. The ward had been breached—too late to stop it now. They were inside the accursed tower, the exit sealed magically behind them.
The party found themselves trapped in a stone corridor lined with writhing shadows and flickering torches that cast dancing lights across the ancient walls. The air was thick with decay and dark magic, and distant sounds echoed from deeper within—the scrape of bone on stone, the faint howl of something unseen.
"Well, lads and lassies," Merrin muttered under her breath, "if this tower's got a welcoming committee, now would be the time to show yourselves." She glanced back at Varrika and Halie, nodding towards their weapons.
