Phase: escalating

The runes on the ancient gate pulsed with a cold blue light in the fading twilight, each symbol writhing as if alive with dark purpose. Merrin's nimble fingers danced across the complex lock mechanism, searching for hidden catches or false plates, while Halie stood beside her, mace ready, eyes fixed on the ominous symbols that seemed to feed on the growing darkness.
Jeane circled the barrier slowly, her wings shifting restlessly behind her as she examined each rune with predatory curiosity. "I can feel it—powerful enough to cut," she whispered, barely containing her excitement. Seraphine maintained distance, sharp eyes fixed on the magical signature that pulsed beyond the ward—a palpable hunger radiating from within.
Merrin's expression grew graver by the moment as she worked. "Stop," Halie hissed suddenly, grabbing Merrin's wrist. "Look at these runes—they're not just decorative." The air grew colder with each step closer to the tower entrance, and the humming energy within radiated a palpable darkness.
The runes flared suddenly in a burst of cold blue light, and a howling wind erupted from the gateway arch, sending Halie and Varrika stumbling back. The air filled with the stench of decay as the dark magic within the barrier surged to life. Jeane sensed a warning in the rune's energy, urging caution.
Merrin's lockpicks clinked against the mechanism as she worked to pick the ancient lock. Suddenly, the runes' glow intensified, and the cold wind died...
Jeane extended her senses past the barrier again, feeling that same ancient hunger pulsing through the stonework—the ward wasn't just a warning but actively seeking intrusion. The magic here was old and ravenous, tied to something sentient within those walls.
"I'm telling you not to touch those locks with physical tools until we find a magical key or disable them some other way—if you force the mechanism, you could trigger every defensive spell they've layered on this place," Jeane warned, her voice low and serious. "Merrin, I know you're good at locks, but this isn't just about tumblers and pins anymore."
Merrin felt the weight of the wards pressing down on her like a physical force as she worked the locks. The runes seemed to pulse and shimmer with an ominous energy, warning her not to proceed.
"But we've come this far," Merrin said, pausing her work for a moment. "The prize awaits." She took a steadying breath. "Alright, here goes." She focused intently on the intricate mechanisms before her. "If anyone senses anything magical that might cause us trouble, speak up now."
Halie didn't like this at all—the air grew heavy with each step closer. Merrin, stop fiddling with those locks! The runes weren't just warnings; they were teeth waiting to close on anything foolish enough to force its way through.
"Varrika, ready yourself—if we need to fight our way through undead or other nasties, I want your strength up front," Halie said, gripping her mace tightly. "Seraphine and Jeane, if either of you senses any gaps in the ward or magical traps linked to those runes, speak up now before Merrin accidentally triggers something we can't control."
The ancient magic pulsed hungrily around them, waiting for someone to make a mistake.
