Shadow of the Ancients / Run 017 / Main Story
Round 6 Transcript
Episode 1 · Episode Round 1

As Merrin's lockpicks click against the mechanism, the ancient runes on the gate shudder and emit a cold blue light. The air howls with a faint, mournful wind that sends the party's torches flickering in response. The ward, sensing its defenses are breached, begins to hum with dark energy. The gate creaks open, revealing a dimly lit corridor beyond. Shadows writhe across the walls like living things, and the air is heavy with the stench of decay. As the party steps through the gateway, the runes on the gate slam shut behind them, sealing the entrance with a deafening crash. The sound echoes through the corridor, followed by an ominous chuckle that seems to come from all directions at once. The corridor stretches out before them, lined with cobweb-shrouded tapestries and flickering torches that cast eerie silhouettes on the walls. Ahead, a staircase spirals upward into darkness, its steps leading toward the tower's secrets and perils.
I stand back from the gate, my eyes fixed on the intricate runes etched into its surface. The air around them feels thick, charged with an ancient magic that prickles against my skin. Jeane's words echo in my mind—the ward is sentient, hungry for intrusion. I can feel it now, a malevolent presence coiling behind those glowing sigils.
My gaze travels up the archway, past where Merrin is working on the lock. The shadows there seem to writhe, as if alive. It's a trick of the light, surely, but it sends a shiver down my spine all the same. The stench of decay drifts from deeper within the tower, cloying and heavy.
"Be careful," I murmur, more to myself than anyone else. My hands twitch at my sides, yearning for the familiar weight of a spellbook. I feel woefully unprepared for this kind of raw power. "That magic... it feels old. Dangerously so."
I take a slow step closer to the gate, squinting at the runes. They seem to pulse in time with my heartbeat, an unsettling rhythm that makes my stomach churn. This is why we came here—to document such things, yes, but also to harness them. To be stronger than the forces that would consume us. Yet now, faced with it, I wonder if we've bitten off more than we can chew.
I grip my mace tightly, muscles tensed and ready for a fight. The runes pulse an ominous blue light, and the cold wind howling from the gateway arch sets my nerves on edge. "Merrin, I don't like this," I mutter. "Those runes look like teeth waiting to snap shut. Better be careful prying those locks open."
I step forward, positioning myself between the gate and Halie. "Halie, if there's undead or worse behind that door, I want you shielded while we take them on."
My eyes scan the dark archway ahead, searching for any movement in the shadows. The air reeks of decay, and I feel a presence watching from beyond the threshold. Whatever magic animates this tower, it's old and hungry. We should be ready for anything that comes through those doors.
As Merrin's nimble fingers work the ancient lock mechanism, her eyes flick up to scan the pulsing runes etched into the weathered stone. The cold wind howling from the gateway arch sets her teeth on edge, and she can practically feel the hunger emanating from the dark depths beyond. "Well, lads and lassies," she mutters under her breath, "if this tower's got a welcoming committee, now would be the time to show yourselves."
She glances back at Varrika and Halie, nodding towards their weapons. "Best keep those swords sharp and holy symbol at the ready, eh? I'm not sure what we'll be facing, but I've a feeling it won't be friendly."
The lock clicks, and Merrin braces herself as the heavy gate slowly swings inward, revealing a corridor shrouded in gloom. Shadows writhe on the walls like living things, and the air is thick with the stench of decay. "Alright then," she whispers, "let's see what secrets this place holds." With a deep breath, Merrin steps across the threshold, her hand never leaving the hilt of her mace as she leads the way into the unknown.
I approach the ancient gate, my holy symbol raised, feeling the wrongness of it. Those runes aren't just warnings—they're teeth waiting to close on anything foolish enough to force its way through. Merrin, stop fiddling! We need a proper plan before you trigger whatever's sleeping behind those stones. Varrika, ready yourself—if we need to fight our way through undead or other nasties, I want your strength up front. Seraphine, Jeane—if either of you senses any gaps in the ward or magical traps linked to those runes, speak up now. We're not barging in blindly. The air itself feels heavy with hunger and malice. Let's think this through before we become dinner for whatever's inside.
The runes on the gate pulse with a cold light—as if they're teeth waiting for us. I feel it: the ward is sentient, and it's hungry for intrusion. Merrin, stop working those locks with iron tools until we find a magical key or disable them some other way. Seraphine, can you sense any gaps in this thing? Any weak points we might exploit without setting off every defensive spell they've got trapped here? I don't like this. The magic feels... wrong. Old and ravenous. Whatever's bound in these walls, it's not going to let us walk away with that sword easily. We need a plan before we go stumbling into whatever hell awaits upstairs. Mental note: the runes pulse faster when Merrin gets close; they're reacting to physical tools specifically. The ward is likely magical in nature and triggered by certain actions—probably intrusion attempts or disrespect of some kind. Physical entry methods like lockpicks might be the worst approach here.
