Phase: converging

The field pulsed like a diseased heart, its energy bleeding out across the ground in visible waves of darkness. Merrin's wound had become the anchor point—shadow tendrils snaked from her leg toward the ancient runes, each pulse drawing more corruption into the stone. Halie grabbed her friend's shoulders, yanking her back with all her strength, but the connection remained, thin and insistent.
"Elric!" Halie snapped, rounding on the hermit. "What is this field and why hasn't it killed us yet?" Her voice echoed off the crumbling walls, sharp enough to make the stones themselves flinch. The old man's eyes were wide with genuine alarm—he hadn't expected this either.
Merrin gritted her teeth against the pain, fighting to stay conscious as the darkness crawled up her thigh. "We need to act fast," she gasped, her voice barely a whisper. "Before it consumes me completely." The halfling's eyes darted between her companions and the ancient gate looming overhead—she needed a solution now.
Jeane crouched before the barrier field, tracing its edges with crimson eyes but never touching the stone itself. The runes pulsed beneath her gaze like infected veins, each symbol alive with malevolent intent. She drew symbols of banishment in the air, muttering words that scoured her tongue, but the field remained impervious to her magic.
Seraphine approached cautiously, her sharp eyes studying the field's energy patterns. "The runes are alive," she muttered, more to herself than anyone else. "But I can't tell if it's actively feeding or passively drawing..." Her words trailed off as another pulse rippled through the stone, Merrin's wound flaring in response.
The barrier field seemed to grow stronger with each pulse, its hunger obvious now—not for their lives, but for something deeper, more fundamental. The ancient gate loomed above them all, a yawning mouth waiting to swallow whatever it could entice inside.
